Re: Halifax Bomber

Halifax: We like the quad mid-upper (where fitted at all). We don't like a single paltry K gun in the nose. I got to go see Friday 13th at York Air Museum back in October - much prettier than the bug-eyed Lancs

Stirling - Jeez, do we get to spend two turns in each zone as a matter of course? Or do the Jerries get an extra +3 to hit? I fear our losses are going to be even worse than with the Lancs - and how many in the sqn have finished a tour so far? emoticon

Re: Halifax Bomber

Through mission 45, no one in the squadron has completed a tour. I know of a couple crewmen who have completed 28 missions--I hope we'll have a celebration after mission 47!

As far as the Halifax and Stirling are concerned, I'm sure Magnus already has things worked out the way he likes, but the first thing I thought of was that they should have more encounters than the Lancaster (especially the Stirling) unless ... didn't some Stirling crews drop their "cookie" over the North Sea to gain altitude, and just carry their incindiaries to the target? I cam imagine the Stirling having a more deadly Tame Boar Table B-2[L], but being allowed to use the Lancaster table in exchange for halving their percentage on target. Once cameras were installed (I don't know the date off the top of my head), that would be the end of it, though.

Re: Halifax Bomber

Part of the problem with Stirlings was their bomb bay - they couldn't carry cookies.

From Wikipedia: The Stirling's maximum bomb load was only able to be carried for relatively short distances of around 590 miles. On typical missions deep into Germany or Italy a smaller 3,500 lb (1,590 kg) load was carried, consisting of seven 500 lb (227 kg) bombs. This was the sort of load being carried by the RAF's medium bombers such as the Vickers Wellington and, by 1944, by the de Havilland Mosquito. Perhaps the biggest problem with the design was that the bomb bay had two structural dividers running down the middle, limiting it to carrying nothing larger than the 2,000 lb (907 kg) bomb. As the RAF started using the 4000 lb (1,815 kg) "cookies" and even larger "specials," the Stirling became less useful. The Handley-Page Halifax and especially the Avro Lancaster offered better performance (the Lancaster could carry twice the Stirling's bombload over long distances, and was at least 40 mph faster while having an operating altitude of about 4,000 ft higher[14]), so when they became available in greater numbers from 1943, it was decided to withdraw Stirlings to secondary tasks.

They could however out turn Me110s and Ju88s due to their thick main spar/wing. Their handling was reputed to be much better than the Lanc or Stirling too.

Maybe a bonus on evasive action and an easier landing table?

Re: Halifax Bomber

Maybe it was Halifax crews I remember reading about. Or maybe Stirling crews were dropping their entire load and flying to Germany empty. Or both ... I thought there was an incident where a fishing fleet in the North Sea believed they were being attacked, when really it was just crews in the bomber stream overhead trying to gain altitude.

Two Add-Ons?

Yes and No. I should have written that they are not yet available, very sorry about that.

Friday the 13th will be finished before the end of February (I hope! With so many other projects going on and especially the B-26 I must finish before the end of February...) but the Mar -41 to July -43 add-on will have to wait, unless I can find a good source for missions soon. I had a very good one online, but it has been removed.

Magnus.

Friday the 13th flew 128 missions. Can your Halifax fly as many? Stand by for the Friday the 13th Add-On...

Magnus-

If your good source of missions was the Bomber Command Diary at the Bomber Command 60th anniversary site, then you can still see them on the Wayback Machine

http://www.archive.org/web/web.php

Search for

Re: Halifax Bomber

I am sorry, I have to withdraw from the campaign due to personal reasons, and I will not be able to continue my work on the Halifax and Corkscrew for some time.

If you have any questions, I will try to answer them.
