THE CORKSCREW MANEUVER

Advanced Evasive Action Guidelines for the Lancaster Variant.

The Corkscrew Maneuver was violent evasive action with dives and rolls to the right and left, flying through the air like a corkscrew, in order for a bomber to shake off an attacker.

In Lancaster it may be used instead of regular evasive action if the enemy fighter is at 5 or 7 before the Initial Attack. Use normal evasive action rules if the enemy plane is at 6 o’clock.

I have compiled my handwritten notes in a document that I wanted to attach to this message, but it seems that it's not possible, so I will send it to the 314 Squadron Commander and ask him if it would be possible to upload it to the site.

I thought that it might help you survive 30 missions.

Magnus.

Re: THE CORKSCREW MANEUVER

Thanks, Magnus! I'm looking forward to seeing that when I access email tonight.

I've never had a good picture of the corkscrew maneuver in my head. They didn't actually roll Lancasters completely over, did they?

Re: THE CORKSCREW MANEUVER

Hello Eric,

I don't think that they rolled it completly over. From what I understand, the rolls were very sharp banks and perhaps a quick turn (well, as quick as a Lanc is) combined with dives and climbs.

I have tried to describe the maneuver in CORKSCREW PORT! (I thought I had an image of the maneuver somewhere, but I can't find it):

It is the standard action against a night fighter, but very tough on the pilot. When a gunner spots a fighter on the left side and calls “Corkscrew port!” the pilot begins a steep dive and turn to the left, toward the attacker, diving approximately 1000 ft, and then begins a climb. The Lanc is still in a left turn, but after 500 ft, and still climbing, the pilot changes direction and makes a sharp turn to the right, which will reduce speed and hopefully make the fighter pilot miscalculate the Lanc’s speed and distance, and over shoot. When the Lanc is back up on it’s original altitude, the pilot dives 500 ft to the right, and then turns left. By now the fighter will have been shaken off, but if it is still tailing the Lancaster, try the Corkscrew again.

The "extreme jinking" from Rules Clarification: Tame Boar and the use of the Vertial Climb Table could perhaps be based on the Corkscrew?

Re: THE CORKSCREW MANEUVER

Hello,

here are a few words that I wrote to Eric about Corkscrew, port! which 'd like to post here too.

I hope it won't be oo hard to understand. I have tried to type out my pencil notes and had to clarify them so that it will make sense to other players, and I have also added a few new things.

It has been a while since I played Lancaster so I
might have forgotten the game flow and how I used
the Corkscrew. I'll see if I can find some time to try
the typed version of my notes.

If you have any questions please ask them and I'll
do my best to try to answer them.

Check out the links that you can find in the message above. Very interesting!

Howdy,

I will make a major revision to Corkscrew, Port! It is difficult to understand how to use it now. I'll make it easier to use and a guide to how to use it will also be included.

If you have any questions please ask them and I'll
do my best to try to answer them.

Check out the links that you can find in a message above. Very interesting!

...has not been revised yet. It doesn't work very well now.
