Merly, it would be unusual for a soldier to go from the 17th Bn (2nd Division) to the 14th MGC (5th Division), but it may have been done, as both were NSW units. Will need to check his details on the National Archives website, but it is 'down' at the moment (not surprising for Anzac Day!).
George was killed in the Battle of Fromelles - Australia's greatest military tragedy. Read whatever you can find on this battle, such as the book by Robin Corfield, Ellis's Story of the 5th Division, or the Official History, volume III.
