Battalion Histories
I was just thinking that amongst the members here we would have a great collection of Battalion Histories amongst us with all our different interests.Perhaps if we listed them, we could do the occasional lookup for someone. I have the 37th, 38th and 39th Histories. So contact me if you would like something looked up in these ones.

Re: Battalion Histories
Neville,
Could you look in each of the LH histories other than 2,3,5, 8 & 11 and check how they treat the disposal of horses please.
I have checked the details in 2nd & 5th against the Regimental diaries and they differ!! 2nds actually incorrectly gives them destroying all horses over 8 and the Diary has a very different story.

Re: Battalion Histories
Rob,
The Royal New South Wales Lancers(1st LHR) history (1960 & 1985) editions has just a tiny bit as follows;
pg 174- (both editions)
"When the horses of the unit were paraded before the Assistant Director of Veterinary Services, Lieut-Col Kendall, on January 25, there were 36 of the original horses still on strength. A number of the horses, mainly the older ones, were shot, and the remainder, sad to relate, were sold locally"
Not much - but that appears all!
Regards
geoff S

Re: Battalion Histories
Neville, I think you take the prize! What an incredible collection you have built up. Must have taken you many years. How did you get the nominal roll on CD? I have only seen it on microfiche and on the AWM website as pdf. files. Is it available for sale on CD?

Re: Battalion Histories
I've been researching the Anzacs who died at Gallipoli, as well as the 5th Light Horse Regiment, since 1984, so most of my books relate either to Gallipoli or the Sinai / Palestine campaign.
I have the official histories for Australia (all), New Zealand (Gallipoli, medical and Sinai/Palestine), and Britain (Gallipoli), Unit histories for every Australian and New Zealand unit of WW1 (I think!), some of the British unit histories, and a lot of other books, reference and other types.
Also many books of remembrance, journals, CWGC cemetery registers (Gallipoli, Lemnos, Egypt), lists of CMF & AIF officers, and so on. I also have a lot of articles, including the full set of 'Gallipolian' and 'Sabretache' magazines and extracts from magazines like 'Reveille'and others.
There's a list of my references (I don't have everything that's on it, but do have most of them) at:
http://www.anzacs.org/references.html
I also have quite a bit of Boer War stuff and a few WW2 histories, mostly ones concerned with the war against Japan.
Unfortunately, because I live in Japan and many of my books are still in Australia, I only have access to a lot of them when I'm back on holidays.
Graeme, I also have the AIF nominal roll on CD-ROM. I've been working on creating an index system for it based in both Filemaker Pro and HTML, because my version doesn't have one as yet and is basically just a huge collection of numbered pages. As far as I know, you can't buy these. Mine was given to me by a guy who obviously knew his way around online database systems, if you get my drift. I'm sure you could get one from 'someone' you know if you emailed directly.
Geoff;
These are the authors for the books I have on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 8th LH and Camels:
2nd
Bourne, G. H. "Nulli Secundus" The History Of The 2nd Light Horse Regiment Australian Imperial Force August 1914 - April 1919.. John Burridge, Perth, 1994.
3rd
Blackwell, Frank M. & Douglas, D.R. The Story of the 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment. Third Light Horse Regimental Club, Adelaide, 1950.
4th
Holloway, D. Hooves, Wheels & Tracks. A history of the 4th/19th Prince of Wales's Light Horse Regiment and its predecessors. Regimental Trustees, Fitzroy, 1990.
Smith, N. C. Men of Beersheba. A History of the 4th Light Horse Regiment 1914 - 1919. Mostly Unsung Military History Research and Publications, Gardenvale, 1993.
8th
Box, A. The best fellows anyone could wish to meet. George Auchterlonie and the 8th Light Horse Regiment. A. Box, Leongatha, 2nd ed., n.d.
Simpson, C. Maygar's Boys - a Biographical History of the 8th Light Horse Regiment AIF 1914 - 1919. Just Soldiers Military Research Publications, Mooroduc, Victoria, 1998.
Camels
Langley, G. F. & Langley. E. M. Sand, sweat and camels : the Australian companies of the Imperial Camel Corps. Lowden Publishing Company, Kilmore, Victoria, 1976.
Inchbald, G. The Imperial Camel Corps. Johnson, London, 1970.

Re: Battalion Histories
Bryn,
Thanks for the list of authors mate- I have a match on all of them here.
I have got a nice limited edition leather bound copy of Maygar's Boys - from memory I think Carl only did 30 special numbered lots.
Geoff S
Keep an eye out as I have e-mailed you direct.
