The British Cavalry in Palestine
Hello Billjims,
I posted this up on the UK - Great War 1914-1918 forum today & have not had a nibble all day. CAN YOU BELIEVE IT
Is it because the Middle East Campaign ranks as a poor 'Sideshow' with my ancestral brethren. Any ideas?
Hello Chooms,
I wonder if someone can confirm if there is in existence a Divisional unit history for the following:
4th Cavalry Division
(Late 1st Mounted Divisions, Late Yeomanry Division)
5th Cavalry Division (Late 2nd Mounted Division)
I am interested in their service in the Middle East during the War. Perhaps the histories of these Divisions are dealt with at only a Brigade or Regimental level?
Any response kindly appreciated
Cheers
Geoff S

Geoff
I am pretty sure I have seen a divisional history for the 5th Cavalry Division. Not sure about the 4th. I will check this out for you

Re: The British Cavalry in Palestine
Wrong. Sorry about that. It was the 'History of the 6th Cavalry Division' that I saw. Haven't found histories for either the 4th or 5th. There is limited mention of both in the relevant volumes of 'The History of the British Cavalry'.

Re: The British Cavalry in Palestine
Hi there
I did check on the CD-ROM Armies of the Crown, but found no reference to cavalry divisions. It is regimentally-based, and divisional histories do not figure.

Re: The British Cavalry in Palestine
Richard & Robert,
Thank you very much for checking these details for me.
I appreciate it very much.
Richard,
Could you please check on your CD-ROM Armies of the Crown
when you get a chance if the following units have a recorded unit history
1/1st Warwickshire Yeomonary (ceased to belong to E.E.F, 19/6/18)
or perhaps these Divisional units
19th Brigade, R.H.A. ("A" & "B" Batteries H.A.C.,
1/1st Notts Battery, and Bde Ammunition Column
or
18th Brigade, R.H.A. (Inverness, Ayr, Somerset Batteries,
and Bde Ammunition Column
Thanks
Geoff S

Rob,
Yes I should get that book as it is a complete history.
Have you read it yet? If, so any comment?

Re: The British Cavalry in Palestine
Geoff
I will extract as much information as I can from the sources that I have. I doubt that the RHA units have histories, certainly none available commercially that I have discovered. However, Farndale's book:
History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery: The Far East Theatre 1941-46 (History of the Royal Regiment of Artillery) (ISBN: 1857533313)
might be helpful. I don't have it (yet) but I have the Western Front history that he wrote. Superb, though lacking in references to primary sources. I live not too far from the Royal Artillery Museum so could check the availability of histories there if you wanted.
I have not seen anything in my sources that resembles a history of the Yeomanry Regiment.

Re: The British Cavalry in Palestine
Robert,
That would be great!
See what you can come up with from your sources for the items I have listed. But,I am in no great hurry, so whenever you get the chance
Even if it is just titles of books (rare or reprinted)
that would be a fantastic result for me.
I am happy to run the checks on the items you locate from sources I have here in Australia & the UK.
Thanks Again
Geoff S

Adderly, HA. The Warwickshire Yeomanry in the Great War, 1922. No ISBN given.
Alan-Williams, AC 'Charge of the Warwickshire and Worcestershire Yeomanry at Huj, November 8th, 1917' MS notes, 27 November, 1917 and TS, n.d., IWM
(Not sure if the new service from the IWM might help you with the latter - see http://www.iwmcollections.org.uk/)
More to follow.
