104th Howitzer Battery, 4FAB

Hi, I am new to the site and am researching my grandfather who served in the ANMEF, RANBT and then 104th Howitzer Battery, 4th Field Artillery Brigade and would appreciate any info regarding the 104th or 4FAB.
Thanks,
Angus

Your grandfather was a busy man! The 4FAB started off in 1914 as the 2nd Division artillery and consisted of the 10, 11 and 12 Batteries, using 18 pounders.
After Gallipoli and before France the 19 Battery was added to the 4FAB. The 104 was part of the 22nd Howitzer Brigade for the 2nd Div.
On arrival in France, the 104 Battery was placed in the 4FAB with the 10, 11 and 12 Batteries, still supporting the 2nd Div.
In 1917 the 2nd Div artillery (4 and 5FAB absorbed the 22FAB and the new 117 Howitzer Battery.)
For the rest of the war, the 2nd Div Artillery had the 4 and 5FAB with the 104 Battery being in the 4FAB.
The Field Artillery used the 18 pounders and the 104 would have used the 4.5 inch Howitzers. The bigger howitzers were used by the Siege Artillery.

Thanks for the information Graeme. I have been compiling a Roll of Honour for the 4FAB in WW1 based on one I received from the 4 Field Regiment RAA Historical Collection in Queensland. I have used this as the basis for looking at the Red Cross files on the AWM and would be happy to provide a copy to anyone interested.
Regards
Angus

Thanks Angus for the offer. I would think it might interest some members of the FFFAIF. We have a few members whose ancestors were in the artillery, but I would have to check if any were in the 4FAB. I'll send you a private email.
