A good observation, Pat. He may have thought (or been told) that they were all out of the Hamel attack. When he found out the Yanks had been involved in such a successful attack, he jumpred on the bandwagon.

I don't really think Pershing tried to grab any glory for Hamel specifically; and that leads to the very point that surprised me. I had always "understood" that Monash included the Yanks because it would be their 1st significant stunt, and was to be on the good ole 4th of July. Mainly because Pershing had renegged, I wasn't his No 1 fan. When he recorded "the honor of cooperating with the Australian Corps" he earned heapsa Brownie Points with me.

Pat

I've always thought the Hamel story would be a good movie.

Good mix of Australians and Seppo's. The forcful nature of high Command. Monash needing the 10 companies of Americans, Pershing not willing to commit his troops because of the British and Dominion losses, finally relenting and allowing 4 to take part and a resounding victory in 93 minutes.

Im just wondering who Mel Gibson will play?

And actually Hamel is a really pretty place. Bit of a hill. Nice country ( now ).

Check out the AWM film F003745. It gives a very good explanation of wot went wrong at Bullecourt compared to the masterstroke of Hamel.

Graeme,
Last night I had a really interesting conversation with Geoff Barr who is writing a book about history of Military Police. (Beyond the Myth....)
I asked him about the Deserters and his answer was "Yes - definitely!" He went on to say that some deserters ran what was nothing more that organised crime. Quoting from one Provosts diary, which states men he arrested had double headed coins, phony papers and stamping equipment for forging papers. They harrassed and bullied not only other soldiers but the locals also. Geoff gave many quotes, from Bean, Monash and diaries relating to Deserters. They were said to slink away when news of a big battle was heard, usually hanging around the soup kitchens then reappeared (sometimes) after all had settled again. One particulary bad lot were called the "Lousy Five" . Also of interest was that after the war there was around 7000 men that were never located after going AWOL.
Geoff's book is sure to be of interest when published.

Thanks, Kate, for the information. Geoff has been assisting the author of 'Wellington's finest', who is also very interested in the Provost Corps. Do you know if the 7000 were 'lost' overseas, or after they made it back to Australia and prior to discharge?

G'Day!

Found that old post about Americans withdrawn from the battle of Hamel using Australian uniforms to fight.

It is a story you find in a couple of stories and I was wondering since a while. But the only detailed mention I found his of two US officers only who fought this way in the 42nd bat.

G'day Nicolas

You may have already read Bean's comments in www.awm.gov.au/cms_images/histories/ww1/6/chapters/08.pdf page 276-9.

He also mentions 42 Bn accoubt of 2 men in AIF Tunics. I have never seen any other record of AEF in AIF uniforms.
