3rd Battle of Ypres - Flanders/ Polygon Wood
I am researching my Great Grandfathers involvement in this Battle. Clarence Victor Prew No 3220 was in the 57th A.I.F which was serving in Flanders at the time of the 3rd Battle of Ypres. Clarence was killed on the 1st day of the Battle 26th September 1917, in Glencorse wood on the Advance of Polygon Wood, but there is no Official known whereabouts of his last resting place. Through my research thus far, I have come to think differentely concerning his place of burial. As he was killed on the first morning of the Battle and reported in his Dossier, Attached information in the Dosier by a fellow soldier stated that he saw him hit by a shell on the morning of the 26th September 1917. As this was the first day of the battle and the 57th actually pressed further toward Polygon Wood in the following days, I believe it was not unusual for Battalions to bury their dead, if the ground the Battle took place on had been claimed by them and was not in " No Man's land". As Clarance died the 1st morning of the Battle then I would suspect that at some time in the following days as the 57th A.I.F pressed forward, his body would have been recovered and buried possibly by his battalion, or other Australian troops.
If anyone has information on the Movements of the 57th Battalion A.I.F at Flanders 1917, especially information on Burials OR Photographs of the 57th taken in Flander's at this time,please contact me.
Also I believe there has been a Documentary done on this Area Of Flanders where if showed a small segment on a pocket watch that had been found with the intials C.V Prew on them and is in some Museum some where - if anyone knows of this 'DOCO' or any of the above, please contact me on

The only documentary I can think of with a watch featured was one put together by John Laffin about his battlefield museum. However, the watch was owned by an RP Staley of the 7th Btn. It was found near Ieper railway station.
A recent documentary, 'The forgotten battlefield' showed excavations north of Ieper, but no such watch was found there (Aussies were not near Boezinge).

I'm afraid it is possible that your Great Grandfather was not able to be buried. If he was hit by a shell, then your Great Grandfather may have been listed as 'Missing in Action' because they could not recover his body. Sadly, this was an all too common occurence in the First World War. I hope that I am wrong. If so, I wish you well in trying to locate his grave.
