Pre War Explorers
G'day All,
While researching Australians that served in the RNAS, I was surprised that two of them had some pre war fame as members of two famous explorations.
Lieutenant Commander Francis Belt was a member of the Horn Sicentific Expedition of Central Australia, the other was Flight Lieutenant Lionel Hooke, who was the wireless operator on Sir Ernest Shakleton's exploration, Frank Hurley was also a member of this mission and recorded the mission both on photo and film.
Does anyone know if the AIF or the RAN had any "famous" explorers amongst their ranks?
Andrew.

Re: Pre War Explorers
Sir Hubert WILKINS MC and bar, AIF official photographer was a member of an Artic expedition before he joined the AIF. After the war he was a member of the Blackburn Kangaroo crew that unsuccessfully contested the Great Air Race won by the Smith brothers. The AWM's 'Wartime' has a good article on Hurley and Wilkins this issue.
