Meaning of abbreviation
Trevor Munro has found an abbreviation in a service record that is unfamiliar to us. A soldier was detached from the 3rd Battalion to 'Byd Bn detachment'. The entry 'Byd' appears twice, so does not appear to be a typo. Does anyone have an idea as to what these letters mean?
Thanks, Graeme.

Re: Meaning of abbreviation
I actually have absolutely no idea......but the thought came to me (and this is a stab in the dark) perhaps it relates to a battalion detachment sent temporarily to the Artillery, i.e. "Battery D"
--- We who are left, how shall we look again
Happily on the sun or feel the rain
Without remembering how they who went
Ungrudgingly and spent
Their lives for us loved, too, the sun and rain?

Re: Meaning of abbreviation
Graeme
I too am only guessing but it could have been a group detatched from the battalion for some special event eg - the Allied Review march of July 1916. Another example - in May 1916 in Egypt members of the 54th Bn were detatched to form a guard unit to protect Godley and any visiting guests like Birdwood and the Prince of Wales. It was called the Anzac Guard but I have never seen a mention of it in any service records. What are the dates involved? If I am on the right track, they may give a clue.

Re: Meaning of abbreviation
Thanks for the ideas. I will get the dates for you, Ross. You may be on the right track. "Bodyguard" could be abbreviated to 'Byd'. Here's another one we've come across: after receiving a promotion to Lieutenant, the next entry is "Indulgence leave" (to Paris). What the heck is indulgence leave? One possibility is in the Macquarie dictionary, where it states "an extension, through favour, of time for payment or performance." Perhaps the officer was owed a 'favour' for something that he had done.
