Re: Lieut. Colonel Stephen Midgley, 5th Light Horse, 54th Battalion
Thanks for the response. Getting info on Grandfathers time with the Queensland units has been challenging. Is there a contact for Rob Thomas who might be willing to offer some advice?
Robert Todd from Canberra has assembled a large body of information about the Morant trial - Robert is a lawyer and has an interest in the legal process side of the affair. Grandfather was in charge of the detail responsible for Morant's security and, on behalf of the officers, offered Morant a horse to escape to Mozambique.
Cheers

Stephen, you may have sent me a private email, but I could not open it. Can re-send if you like. Otherwise, I have heard that Rob will be in touch with you. He is intrigued by your grandfather.

Mate,
No worries, do you have the Woolimore book on the BVC as there is a long discription of your relations patrol that awarded him his medal in South Africa.

Re: Lieut. Colonel Stephen Midgley, 5th Light Horse, 54th Battalion
Thanks for the reply. I read Bill Woolmore's book with great interest. I contacted Bill by phone and had an informative yarn.
Grandfather put great store in personal integrity and his longstanding friendships demonstrated this. Many of those friendships came from his time in Africa. He was held in high esteem by his army colleagues (a letter from the 5th LH Association to my grandmother after his death was most complimentary). His fellow officers must have had reciprocated this regard - General Wilson (former CO 5th LH) was the Godfather of my father Stephen Hamar Midgley, and Genl Birdwood was Godfather of my father’s younger sister Stephanie.
He was one of 13 children (6 sons)- his brother Frank went to the Boer War with him in the 2nd Contingent QMI and another brother (Richard I think) was on Gallipoli.
Once again, many thanks for the interest.

Re: Lieut. Stephen Midgley, Royston´s Horse 1906
Dear Stephen,
Perhaps you already know this - but in case not:
"Bambatas Awakening in the Morning" (war song of Royston´s Horse 1906) 2nd verse:
Do you ken Royston´s Horse at the break of day,
Royston and Frazer, Midgley and Gray,
From hill-top to valley, thirsting for fray,
As they led Royston´s Horse in the morning.
LtCol "Hell-fire Jack" Royston was CO. Major Frazer 2/C. Lt Midgley you naturally know, but the fourth person, Lt Gray (Cpt from 24th July 1906)could perhaps be interesting as an old comrade of your grandfather.
Ivor Thord-Gray (born in Stockholm, Sweden 17 Apr 1887 - dead in Coral Gables, Florida, 18 Aug 1964)served in 15th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers 1914-15 Maj 2/C, 11th Bn Northumberland Fusiliers 1915-16 LtCol CO, 1/26th London Regiment LtCol CO 1916, Canadian Expeditionary Force LtCol Intelligence 1918-19, Russian Army COS Siberian Army 1919 Col Cav, 2/C 1st Siberian Assault Div 1919, COS East Siberian Cossacks Army Corps 1919, MjGen. Retired 1920. US MjGen 1935 Florida Militia.
Greetings from Stockholm,
Stellan

Re: Lieut. Colonel Stephen Midgley, 5th Light Horse, 54th Battalion
I have found out that Stephen Midgley and Ivor Thord Gray were best friends in Royston´s Horse and that they kept up a correspondence at least to the 1920-ies.

Message for Stellan
Stellan
My grandfather regarded Thord Gray as a close and trustedfriend and they maintained a correspondence unti the early 1950's. I have a few of their letters that they exchanged over the years.
I travel quite a lot and it is not always easy to get access to these forums.
Regards
Stephen

Re: Lieut. Colonel Stephen Midgley, 5th Light Horse, 54th Battalion
Thank you for that informastion, Stephen. I know that one letter Ivor Thord-Gray wrote to your grandfather in the 1920-ies was 28 pages.
Thord, as he was called in the family, a o wrote this about a situation in June 1906. He and Captain Watt, CO B-Sqn, had been separated from the unit:
"At this time Watt and I were rather far away and we understood that we had been rather stupid to walk such a distance when the surroundings were full small impis everywhere and we both started to long for our common comrades, especially Midgley, our tried and trusted comrade".
Does the letters you have tell us anything of what Ivor Thord-Gray was doing after 1930?
Best greetings from Stockholm,
Stellan

Re: Lieut. Colonel Stephen Midgley, 5th Light Horse, 54th Battalion
Stellan
I have some of the Christmas cards he sent Grandfather from that time. The last letter I have is dated September 24 1950. Plus a short note dated 27 Sept 1946 in the fly leaf of a small book Thord Gray wrote.
Thord Gray wrote a Small book "Attack and defense in Trench warfare" and sent a copy to grandfather in 1919 from Omsk in Siberia where he was a Lt Gen with the White Russian Army.
Regards
Stephen

Re: Lieut. Colonel Stephen Midgley, 5th Light Horse, 54th Battalion
Did Stephen Midgley on any occasion serve in the Cape Mounted Rifles during the 1899-1902 period?
