Any Help would be greatly appreciated!!
Hello =)
I know this is a long shot.. But i was wondering if anyone has any websites which may be helpful.
My great grandfather served at Gallipoli, but comitted suicide soon after returning home. I was speaking to my grandmother today and she was telling me how she wished she knew where he went to during the war and what he did as she never got a chance to ask him.
I'm collecting details on him at the moment for from few records my Father was given.. So far i just have his name, Jack Scott from Victoria. That he was in the 7th or 9th Light horse britallion (spelling!!?) And that she thinks he was born in April (Possibly the 22nd) and that he trained in the dessert.
I have one of his badges that reads:
998
PTE J. Scott.
B/L.H. RGT A.I.F.
I understand that with a name like Jack Scott (and Nancy doesnt believe he had a middle name) he will be hard to track down. But if anyone has any websites that may start me off it would be greatly appreciated.

A first glance at the AWM's niminal roll does not reveal a soldier with that number and name combination. The stamping probably reads 8th Light Horse Regiment. I found a James Scott, No, 398 4th Div MGC; 958 James Scott, 7th Battalion; 996 John Scott, 3rd Signal Troop AE. Can you confirm the service number is definitely 998? I will have another look and go through the Scotts in the 8th LHR.

Hi Anna, think I found him. Private 996 Private John Scott of the 8th LHR. Enlisted on 27.1.15 and sailed on the HMAT Uganda on 21.6.15, aged 19. Next of kin was Thomas Scott of The Nursery, Scarborough, England.
Single and C of E. My next step is to find him on the National Archives website.

YOU ARE FANTASTIC! I called nanny and she said that his father was Thomas, and lived in Scarborough! I'm now in the process of purchasing his records! Thankyou so so so so much! You have made my month!!! =)

Hi Anna
I'm just a little curious - you say that your GGrandfather comitted suicide soon after returning home.
According to a note in his files (John Scott 996) - he died in July 1940 - this is 20 years after his return to Australia.
Is this death date correct - and without sounding too gruesome - I was wondering if you might be able to share with me how he died?
I ask because I'm very interested in the poor men who felt the need to take their own lives after going through so much.
