bravery medal

My uncle, Robert VERITY, won the military medal for bravery
during the first world war in Europe.
I have a copy of his service record showing that he received the award but it does`nt say where or for what.
Where do I go to discover same. Uncle "BOB" was my favourite uncle as a kid and in the course of doing my family history I would like to record what he did that earned him the citation so that my families future generations can see for themselves the contribtion people like my uncle "bob" made towards making this country the greatest country in the world.

The Aust War Memorial will probably have the wording of his citation for the MM. However, due to demands on their time, they may not be able to transcribe and send to you. You can hire a researcher to do the job for you (shouldn't take long) or travel to Canberra and do it yourself. Keep an eye on the AWM website (Honours and Awards biographical database) as the staff may be slowly palcing the citations on the website. The records are now fragile and so you cannot handle the original any more. Try writing a letter to the Research Section - they may be feeling generous!

Be aware that for many men awarded the Military Medal the citation was kept to the official wording on the medal itself, "For Bravery in the Field".

Some had a full explanation on the citation, some did not, depending on Unit and the skills of the Company Clerk. My maternal Grandfather (45th Bn) and my father (42nd Bn) were both awarded the MM. My Grandfathers citation is complete, my fathers merely those 5 words on the reverse of the medal.
