I have been trying to find out for the past 2 years what a silver badge was. It was printed on my Grandfathers discharge papers. I finally found out that it was given to the soldiers who where injured/ shot. During the depression if they had a silver badge they where allowed more rations.

Hi, I have a badge that is what I suspect you have called the silver badge. It is about 1 1/4 inches wide, round, with King Gorges cypher in the middle with a Kings crown on top. Surrounding this are the words "For King and Empire, Services Rendered". Hope this helps.

Hi,
The badge you are talking about is the "Silver War Badge". This badge was issued to men given honourable discharge through sickness or wounds recieved during service with one of the armed forces during WW1. The majority of these badges were issued through sickness. If this man could no longer serve for whatever reason he would be awarded a badge.
The badge was worn on civilian clothing. Each badge has a unique serial number for each man....the number impressed on the reverse of the badge is not his regimental number. You can ID badges to Australians by the letter "A" prefix infront of the badge number....NZ...for you guessed it....New Zealand recipients.
There was a "Silver War Badge" issued for WW2 but that is another story!

Does anyone know if there is a record of the issue of these silver war badges, so one could possibly identify the original owner by the number on the reverse?
I have noticed that the badge number is usually found recorded where applicable in the WW1 personal records from the NAA, but if one had a serial number from a badge could that number be researched from a master file of some sort?

Stephen, the National Archives would be the logical repository of such a list. Maybe Neil Smith of 'Mostly Unsung' has some knowledge of this, as Neil seems to be able to unearth lists of many things of beauty and wonder.

Thanks Graham,
I did find a fairly extensive article on the various badges, in RD Williams latest "Medals to Australians" book and apparently each Military District was to keep an accurate record of the issue of these badges, to the point where it was considered an offence not to return the badge if one became fit for active duty again. If Australian Silver War Badges had A on the back and New Zealand had NZ and the British army had B and O (or no prefix at all) and the RAF had (naturally!) RAF then does anyone know what a prefix of N before the number on the back may mean. Is it possibly New Foundland?. I have a SWB with N on the back followed by a number
