THE RANK DELUXE - Single Release Knees Up

The aptly-titled ‘Tight-Rope’ - sung by guitarist Lewis (‘a loud-hailer on legs’, NME) - is taken from The Rank Deluxe’s forthcoming debut album, due May 2008, and serves as a taster from a band whose development over the last 12 months has been in-spite of their ongoing internal issues.

The original trio of explosively raw AA singles, ‘Doll Queue’, ‘Style’ & ‘Poorman’s Cab’ released over summer ’06 threw The Rank Deluxe into sharp relief: NME found itself witnessing ‘the rowdiest, angriest punk-rock explosion in the capital’, Uncut describing their set-closer ‘Style’ as a ‘thug-rock masterpiece’ while John Kennedy at Xfm made every release a Single Of The Week and Jack Penate was brave enough to introduce himself as a fan.

2007 in contrast was largely spent writing and recording, putting together their incendiary debut with producer Mark Rankin (Kate Nash, Adem) in London’s Miloco studios. Indeed, aside from road-testing new material over a summer residency on their home turf at the New Cross Inn, the band played only two other shows last year at the Camden Crawl in April, and The Great Escape in May. But it’s in the dynamic scope of the forthcoming debut album - a thrilling car-crash of punk-rock, reggae, rocksteady and psychedelia - that the real action of The Rank Deluxe is exposed.

Bristling with attitude and at war with themselves, The Rank Deluxe hail from south-east London, finding more common ground with Grime or old school UK punk as with most of their supposed contemporaries. Singular and in thrall to no one, they are by turns willful, sometimes (unintentionally) divisive but also intuitive with a knack for aligning the musical and social commentaries that similarly characterized bands like The Specials, Ian Dury or Gang of Four in the late ‘70s and early ‘80’s.

Rank... Deluxe... Richard Buchanan (Lead Vocals & Guitar) / Lewis Dyer (Lead Guitar & Vocals) / John Wallis (Bass) / Chris Ballard (Drums)
