ROCKLANDS?

Over the past few years, the Music Tourist Board (i.e. friends, collectives, individuals, talents, venues, industries and the city's most creative community) have made "Rocklands" a reality.

Since the short films "Rocklands - Live In New Cross" alerted London, The UK and even the world to what skint passion could achieve the vibe has spread to contacts in the music industry, high profile involvement/support and a different kind of network for the 21st century with proven results.

Inviting rising stars of photography, film, fashion, ideas, media and social inclusion to get involved with the most entertaining and ambitious of the new renaissance creates a new future - all are welcome. Share The Joy.
http://www.myspace.com/artfulmtb

The Rocklands band stages of 006 and 007 proved a lively attraction at People's Day (a year off in 008 to stage at Made In Deptford Festival).

Please note we are unable to book any slots for this year, as that had already been taken care of by the festival, who invited the Rocklands brand to return. Having checked out the line up it was a definite yes please.

There will be a corner, as ever, to exchange badges, stickers, ideas, mailing lists etc and in a Music Tourist Board style we hope to see some of the bill working together after this day.

If you write, take photos, draw, want to get involved in rock'n'roll then we do also have some experience along with the punky attitude! Seeking reviews and articles for Monthly Planet zine (average 5,000 readers per month)

----------------------------------------------
People’s Day rivals any community festival spirit in the land that you have to pay for! Thirty thousand people can’t be wrong. This is is the kind of positivity that makes Great London, greater.

An eclectic line up of varied professional arts and a first class showcase of diverse, locally connected talent; all musical genres, all kinds of dance, cabaret, art, childrens activities, film, comedy, street theatre, circus and sport and fashion shows across eight stages.

There’s also international food stalls, a craft market and that all important local community vibe that’s putting Lewisham in the national and international spotlight. “The rock’n’roll borough” (NME).

Talking of that, the reputation for “Rocklands” (i.e. South East London - opposite Docklands!) grows as it is increasingly recognised as a breeding ground for cool new music talents going places (from People’s Day last year to Radio 1’s Big Weekend this year for New Cross outfit Kids Love Lies, and from Rocklands Stage to winning the Urban Act of The Year at Indy Awards (The I.R.S.), and Xfm / Artrocker / Underage Festival acclaim (William), Kate Nash supports / record deals (Blah Blah Blah), Leonard Cohen / Bob Dylan / Wedding Present supports (Dexy) - and much more.

Seriously, people of South East London, you have a high percentage of rising arts and music stars living among you. With all the venues, theatres, parks, collectives, studios, galleries, creative industries, museums and first class educational establishments the rise of this region of the UK is largely people powered - today is a chance to congregate to celebrate good times, come on!

OFFICER KICKS - on stage 6pm

OFFICER KICKS

"No-nonsense killer tunes"
(Clash Magazine) - Following the acclaim for debut album, The Six Grand Plot, (2008). Rockers, Officer Kicks, release their LP album, Citywide Curfew later this year. “We achieved what we set out to. Musically, Sonically, Lyrically and every other ICALLY it’s our best work”. The first single will be the live favourite - Tom Thumb in July.

Pre-release feedback on the new LP, and their growing live reputation - “Inspiring, uplifting, classic” (GigWise) - is winning hot gigs, credible reviews, festival slots (including the main stage of Secret Garden Party with Jarvis Co cker), football ground airplay and a word of mouth following. They’ve just picked up USA radio, cool L.A. management and more exciting news to announce soon. Possibly the best kept secret in rock right now, Officer Kicks are NOT to be missed.

Some recent press:

"Super spiky rock'n'roll with plenty of attitude... Their name should be a lot more familiar by the end of the year"
(Sunday Express Newspaper, March 2009).

"Real rockers on the verge of big things... They deliver every song with the panache of a George Best hat trick... This band could be massive"
(South London Press March 2009.

ANITA MAJ - on stage 4pm

Image

Anita Maj has been putting pen to paper, and pick to guitar, since her early teens.

Her tunes - which have got edgier over time - are inspired by early legends of rock such as Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix, as well as modern cutting-edge bands like The Killers and Kings of Leon.

This London-based, Northern born artist blends rock, pop and elements of blues and soul drawing crowds to many of the gigs she has played at they city's key venues such as the Boogaloo Bar, Wilmington Arms and The Fly.

Anita's lyrics reflect her independent, feisty and passionate spirit but there's also a darker side tinged with pain; all achingly brought out in her dynamic live experience.

With a new band, Anita has taken the live shows to another level, with the Moonesque Greg Hall on Drums and Roger Millington on bass, the material has now taken on a harder, rockier edge. The other element in the mix is Alex Myers, a bright, young, smokin’ guitarist who brings a new vibrancy and tanget to the proceedings.

After performance feedback has been nothing short of euphoric. Anita Maj and her band will challenge you, entertain you, rock you, move you and leave you giddy for more.

RAW FOX - on stage 3.30pm

RAW FOX
Image
The confidence of Mohammed Ali.
The power and and energy of the National Grid.
Rawfox is the band the music industry has been waiting for.

Oozing confidence and raucous intent, Londoners Paul Fuller (Lead Vocals and Drums), Marlon Harris (Lead Guitar and Vocals) and Luke Raiment (Bass and Vocals) brim with star quality.

Rawfox give the audience something ultimately fresh. It's all about having a good time and creating modern classics to the point of this being their third return to People's Day Festival by popular demand.

They have also supported Proud Mary many times and at Liverpool’s famous Cavern Club and The Wizard Festival in Aberdeen where they have left the audience wanting more.

Rawfox are regulars on the London circuit having done around 80 gigs. They've been on Guildford’s Radio Lion (including an interview), played with Bonehead (the ex-Oasis member joined them on stage for a few songs) + gigs with DJ sets by Mani (Stone Roses/Primal Scream), Mike Joyce (The Smiths), Alabana 3 and an Ian Brown after party.

Witness Full On Maximum Rock n Roll at its best. When Rawfox are on stage they Rip it up! Come along for the Ride

SHORT SKIRTZ - on stage 3pm

Short skirtZ
Image

Sexy sleaze funk/rock outfit who formed in 2007.

Their signature tune, 'Short skirtZ' was played on XFM Radio within two months of the band starting and stayed in the XFM Uploaded Top 5 for nine months.

Having given birth to a potential monster, in 2008 They reached the final of Surface Unsigned (the UK's largest unsigned band competition) and won Best Drummer award.

Short SkirtZ have received critical acclaim with comparies to bands such as the Chili Peppers, No Doubt, Skunk Anansie, (S.C.A.M) Blondie and Hole and 2009 has already seen them play at some of London's top gigging venues and promises to be a top year.

So get close now.

DANCE MACABRE

Image

Danse Macabre came together in South London in October 2007. Since then have taken their own brand of folk-rock cabaret around London, Brighton and beyond, including a set at the Worcester Music Festival. Danse Macabre feature Ash on vocals, Taylor on vocals, guitar and violin, and Steph on bass, synthesisor and backing vocals. The band’s songs, characterised by bright tunes and bitter-sweet lyrics, have been described as folk-goth, quirky pop and even progressive rock. Danse Macabre usually play as a trio but are occasionally joined by a drummer.

JIMMY AND THE BANNED

JIMMY AND THE BANNED
Image
Big time rock'n'roll on roll! Jimmy And the Banned recently impressed the Unplugged Sessions (Deptford Albany) so much that they were invited to play the launch, supporting Squeeze legend, Glenn Tilbrook.

This month they played the rock night of City Showcase Festival (Xfm at The Borderline/Rocklands at New Cross Inn) alongside King Of Conspiracy, Bleech and Falling Embers.

Persuasive and passionate, listen out for the next chapter.

Join the StreetVibes crew - Magic, Leximan, Supaflex, Capone and Jade and the scandalous Cuban dancers - as they perform tracks from their album, 'Get Mad Now II',
http://www.streetvibesuk.co.uk

Referred to as The Mighty Chet so often that some people think that is the band name(!), CHET are alternative awesome rock of such magnitude that they sure don't sound like an unsigned band.. . Witnesses report. "it's easy to think that this is a band that can do anything" and "Chet were, to put it simply, awesome. They didn’t just raise the bar tonight… they sent it into orbit." and "If they are playing live near you then go and check them out." - This is your chance to catch them live for free, and see why.
http://www.chetsonfire.com

THE DARLING REDS have already been called South London Heroes In The Making recently and are amassing a (lively!) following with every live show and via their (hot) latest demos. "it's obvious they'd be dynamite live." (The Mag). A mix of ska punk, pop tunes, rock energy and full on charisma. Miss them and weeeeeeeeeeep.
http://www.myspace.com/thedarlingreds

INDIGO MOSS - juice fuelled, foot stomping tunes, this is New Cross's greatest hillbilly pop sensation courtesy of The Moss Family. Rockabilly rock of the tipped-as-hell kind, and a sensation at the first Artful event and in demand at all the best outdoor events this year. Like today!
http://www.myspace.com/indigomoss

THE FAIRIES BAND - the most recognisable group in the country, works of art (and exhibited artists!), The Fairies recently return to New York, by demand! Gracing the stage with their pop-infused brand of in your face showgirl punk. They impress gob smacked audiences with spiky rock, creating a storm on stage (or even on the Good Morning TV sofa!). "The first time a group has induced pop rapture in too, too long" - drowned in sound.
http://www.thefairiesband.co.uk

DEXY first got up on stage and dared to sing during Artful (October 005). Used to singing backing vocals and playing guitar in cult rock bands, it was a brave first for him. The effect his honey toned vocals and soul prodding tunes had, probably astonished him as much as everybody else. Nowadays, he’s much in demand, with even Elliott Smith’s band among those singing his praises. Recently played at the City Showcase event in Goldsmiths and less than a year after starting his career, is on the same bill as Bob Dylan at this year's Bournemouth Festival. Get closer at Rocklands Bandstand!
http://www.myspace.com/dexyspace

Like all the above mentioned CERI JAMES is putting South London on the national and international map, and has also compiled two twenty first century classics I Love New Cross (acoustic/semi acoustic) and New Cross Replugged - both highly acclaimed in the national press. Ceri is a well known face and name on the local scene, a promoter and especially, a singer/songwriter with some great songs up his leather jacket clad sleeves! Take Deptford Broadway, for instance. A classic. http://www.myspace.com/cerijames

Plus one or two more names to announce including the DJs throughout the day

http://www.myspace.com/artfulmtb
2bob http://www.2bob.co.uk Thursdays at The Fox on Lewisham High Street put New York to shame!
Dirty Sounds http://www.myspace.com/dirtysounds - DJs, musicians, love pirates, promoters, oh, you name it, dirty rock'n'rollers
