The vibe of London South East X goes central from summer.

That includes making the next bills from crowd, the usual stuff, all transported wholesale to the 299 next to Great Portland Street.

It's called 453 because the bus to Sarf London (Elephant & Castle for S.W. then the Old Kent Road to Deptford) stops 42 steps away every 15 minutes, 24 hours, like a courtesy limo home in case you miss the last train to Kent (after 1am) from Charing Cross.

It's also called that though, because with more people able to get to and from the club (and discount entry flyers in local venues nearer the time), it's not just the best of what's making Rocklands smile - co-promoting with local peeps what put on gigs, DJ etc - it's the wavelength too.

Patrick Jones is a rock-beat poet who has just released an impressive new album - Tongues For A Stammering Time - on Anhrefn Records. It features contributions from Billy Bragg (who he is touring with), James Dean Bradfield and his brother Nicky Wire of Manic Street Preachers among a stirling line up and is a soundtrack of twisted 21st century mirrored in beats.

The Shills are the fresh faced East Spanglier newer wave rockers making a definitive impression from the get-go. This bill needs attitude and energy and with a new single on the anti-establishment R*E*P*E*A*T label they come with the stance inbuilt.

30 Jul: PATRICK JONES, EDIT/SELECT, THE SHILLS

ROCKLANDS presents The 453 Club
Music + Word + Film + DJs
PATRICK JONES + EDIT/SELECT + THE SHILLS
7pm-11pm @ 229 Great Portland Street
229 Great Portland Street, London

An often quoted, inspiring playwright and author,
wordsmith, Patrick Jones, is in posession of a very 21st century beat-poet-beats album 'Tongues For A Stammering Time'(Anhrefn Records) and currently touring with Billy Bragg.

Edit/Select are a young musical gang at the heart of the art beat of London's lower east side, making a name for themselves via their newer wave tunes and in your face shows, charming new friends with pro-active scene creation and staging live music events and festival stages. Though still fresh out of the traps, they're already rather good according to Xfm's John Kennedy.

And he knows his stuff. They've already played the legendary Astoria II just before the city lost the West End's main music venue and find themselves on the same bill as Motorhead, Happy Mondays etc at this year's Guilfest.

If it's about new music and promising young upstarts then Edit/Select are worth a peek.

The Shills are Cambridge based post-punkers with spiky British charm reminiscent of The Smiths, Pulp, The Clash and Elvis Costello. Formed through frustration the band is their escape vehicle.

The need for excitement and intelligence and a growing reputation has propelled them to the attention of sussed industry and they been taken under the wing of Manics/Anthony & The Johnsons/Tricky producer, Roger Fife.

Rocklands is a mix of new music, grassroots anti-scene, visual art and punky attitude on an otherwordly mission that has created films, festivals, industry and media from inviting involvement. So far, mostly in Deptford and New Cross, but thanks to the 229, now in Central London.

It will be the 453 club, as not only is the venue next to Great Portland Street tube, ten minutes walk from both Camden and Oxford Circus, it's also a few steps to the 453 bus which runs to South London every 15 minutes. A 24 hour ride home 30 seconds from the door!
