YEAR 003 : MUSIC TOURIST BOARD

A brief history from a personal point of view of a Love Pirate

Millennium Eve @ The Millennium Stadium,
Land Of Song...
then just after midnight on Planet Earth it was the Year 2000

A parallel dimension was born.
Planet Water : Year 000 - The morning of the Age of Aquarius.

Year 001 :
Inspiring trip to Havana, Cuba (Manic Street Preachers). The every day people are so healthy in spirit and richer in love and ease.

Leave music Industry at the end of the year. Advised that “good bands won’t call in at New Cross and Deptford”. First live Music Tourist Board event (with Unemployable Welsh Scum etc) is a Share The Joy party in New Cross. Among the revellers enjoying the vibe are Toby L (later responsible for Channel 4’s Rockfeedback TV).

Year 002 :

Inspiring trip to The Basque Country of Spain. (Radiohead). A conversation inspires the recognition of the many lovely humans that still populate the planet, The Playing Class (which has nothing to do with class, other than that going out to play is classy!)

Year 003 :

New Year's Day - Rocklands/Music Tourist Board begins.

Just because 3 is a magic number.

Make something nice happen in an alleged nowheresville. Inspired by the local every day people of South East London, many of whom are like Martin Millar characters, come to life. A band meeting with Corporation:Blend gives birth to the idea of NOT having to keep going to Camden and Shoreditch to see our favourite new bands, why not invite them down to play here...

In the virtual new republic opposite Docklands, on 22 Apr - Pop Of The Tops club begins at Paradise Bar (now the Royal Albert) where New Cross Road meets Deptford Broadway.

- Unemployable Welsh Scum are on the decks, Corporation:Blend kick off the club and everybody in the building (on and off stage) is a star. Tuesdays become gatherings. Kids from the dance floor help out on the decks during the £1 beer scrum at the bar, go on to start clubs, labels etc (Young & Lost, Greenwich/Toy Pirate, Dirty Sounds, The Heartbreakers etc). A festival’s worth of bands turn up and party. People blue-tac a gallery of photos etc to the walls. We love Eddie Argos of Art Brut’s alphabetical DJing, Metro Riots booze fuelled craziness and the way that everybody makes friends with everybody else. Hatcham Social are the faces of New Cross Road. Peace actually breaks out at the world’s Time Zone.

Sept - First Music Tourist Board meeting inspired by Pop Of The Tops. Musicians, film makers, photographers, writers, friends, day dreamers meet up one afternoon in Paradise. Between them; Digital Sneakers, Dirty Sounds, Corporation:Blend, Twisted Charm, students, Bloc Party, Maps Magazine, The Fairies Band, Special Needs, Angular Records and more exchange ideas and contacts, play music, create projects and collaborations. They create an event for the following month within a few hours...

... it is Pop Of The Tops/South East Xhibition (directed by The Fairies), blue tacked to the walls, program by Maps, photography by Paul Madden and Kana Go-Go, filming by Digital Sneakers and half the audience in more future star bands... this is the forerunner of Artful.

Oct 003 : Pop Of The Tops filmed for a month by Digital Sneakers, decorated by The Fairies (South East Xhibition), photographed by Kana Go Go & Paul Madden (who also made a programme for it) a month after a load of bands and creative friends met informally (Angular Records compile album The New Cross released in Nov 003 and launched at one of these Tuesday nights.)... by the end of the year, there has actually been a chant of NEW CROSS, NEW CROSS! at the Paradise Bar.

It feels great that a spirit of community, a feeling of involvement and a pride in the positivity has arrived. It has never gone away. This is not about styles of music or any other divisions. In fact it is The Anti Scene.
