NEBRASKA

NEBRASKA :

South East London's mega band in waiting, deservedly adored, they will floor you live. And word is getting out, though more than one person can't believe they are an unsigned band. Dramatic, poetic and anthemic, Nebraska combine modernityand classicism to pack a hard punch in a velvet glove.

The iconic guitar sound of Nebraska’s guitar hero Ben and theintelligent lyrics in Michael’s 40-a-day choirboy voice weavewith washes of wonderful other-worldliness over smooth running bass. Nebraska deliver the three minute pop song and seven minute epic with the same level of passion.

Every song is a single, each its own classic. or as Joyzine put it,  “Nebraska meld the wistful melancholy of The Smiths with thepassion and urgency of early Manics and come out somewhere entirely of their own". I prefer Nebraska to either.”

Headliners Nebraska are something of local heroes in these here parts. Taking the stage they have a definite presence about them. Front man Mike prowls the stage like a panther and as he surveys the crowd, bass player Stax and drummer Don gently ease into opener First Russian Winter to create a vast and expansive landscape, before the duelling guitars collide in and inject frantic and stabbing riffs as Mikes vocals soar somewhere between Morrissey and a swooping falsetto.

If you were to take all the good bits from early Manic Street Preachers, Smashing Pumpkins, Elliott Smith and put it together you'd find Nebraska. They are what you want from a rock band, full on pomposity! Frightening guitar solos, brooding bass lines, menacing arrangements and shapes in abundance, when Ben & Dexy weren't on their knees, hands going at lightning speed up and down the guitar neck they were standing, heads low, black hair and eyeliner smashing away on chords.

The poppier Grey Spaces gets people moving and on The Sound That Stars Make there were whoops of joy and this amalgamation of delicate and harsh arrangements as well as soaring vocals was the outstanding moment of the night. Nebraska are surely destined for greatness

6. Nebraska
Crap name, great band. Musically, Nebraska have trimmed the excess fat off traditional prog rock and coupled it with the best in rock anthems. But they also haven't forgotten the importance of a killer tune.

Michael Hall on vocals is the sort of front man who could hold a stadium in the palm of his hands, but has to make do with back rooms in South London pubs for the moment.

The two guitarists look like a couple of fallen angels with a collection of ASBOs gathering dust back at their squat, but play as though eternal redemption depends on tonight's gig.
The rhythm section is as solid as the Rock of Gibraltar.

Their excellent first album The Path to the Silent Country has just been released on Hometown Jam records.

NEBRASKA play PRONTO CLUB, Queens Cross on Friday 16th March!

NEBRASKA are on The Path To The Silent Country. Tipped as one of the new bands to keep a serious eye on this year, they've already proved worthy of sussed attention by packing out Water Rats Theatre. Producer Adrian Hall (The Clash, Live 8, Ray Davies) discovered a rough demo of The Sound That Stars Make and was hooked. Born and instrumental in the much-touted New Cross anti-scene that heralded the likes of Bloc Party and Art Brut,  they'd a wealth of material just waiting to be realised with a willing and able producer.

The resulting album ‘The Path to the Silent Country’ was recorded in early 2006 and released in October on Hometown Jam Records, the label operated by his protégé Zoe Smith, becoming one of the brightest shining hidden gems of the year and garnering increasing praise as the buzz upon discovering it, builds.

It's not just the incredible songwriting that marks them apart, their intense passion live, and the asbo-choirboy vocals of Michael Nebraska are all part of what makes music fans such staunch supporters when they check them out.

Nebraska have been compared to The Smiths, the Manics, Afghan Whigs and more, kicked off the year with increasing media and industry attention (including a double page in Time Out magazine).

Nebraska are, and always have been, a self-funded, self-realised DIY band with an absolute dedication to music and a belief in honesty and soul over fashion and trend.
