SEEING SCARLET

SEEING SCARLET - Classic newer wave pop.

Pop stars with raw energy, soaring vocals and big big tunes.

Seeing Scarlet formed in 2004 when fortune found them all inhabiting the same rehearsal space, pockets brimming with songs but as yet no full band to play them.

Things clicked together immediately: through intensive rehearsing and demoing, lovingly-crafted melodies with trademark harmonies and bittersweet lyrics were complemented by searing guitar riffs and a Fort Knox-tight rhythm section.

Last year , limited debut single Ugly Girl / Never Good Enough sold out in two weeks , during which time the video for Never Good Enough was downloaded 15,000 times on various music TV including MTV2.

Critics described it as 'stunning' (Room Thirteen), 'glorious' (Glasswerk), 'compelling' (Damn Pest), 'alluring' (Music Week), 'catchy' and 'anthemic' (The Fly). Industry bible Music Week had already noticed a stadium grandeur in their early demos, XFM have also recognised their potential.

Currently recording their debut album. The buzz is growing. Rapidly.

SEEING SCARLET - MENTAL NOTES PART ONE
Good Advice / An Eye In The Storm / Bumblebee / Something’s Not Right / Second Time / Dead

On 5th December, Seeing Scarlet release part 1 of their (genuinely) hotly anticipated debut album Mental Notes, to download. Following on from the success of their sold-out first single 'Never Good Enough' with its MTV playlisted video, Mental Notes Part One showcases the breadth and uniqueness of Seeing Scarlet's sound. It will be available from iTunes and sussed major online retailers. Also on sale, along with the video for the warning-blast of new single ‘Something’s Not Right’ at www.seeingscarlet.com

With the band's work already being hailed by music fans, media and industry alike as a near-future big tip, now is the time to be Seeing Scarlet. Live. A last minute, first-on slot last month to a handful of people at Water Rats Theatre was reviewed in Evening Standard Lite as “Fantastic beyond belief”. Seeing Scarlet returned for a support slot this month bringing a huge crowd with them - the show at the venue’s Disco Volante club on 15th December will be a celebration of Live Mental Notes - early arrival advised!

Anthemic, horizon-stretching noir-pop’ The Fly, ‘Ambitious, strident and stadium-craving melodies’ Music Week, ‘Their confidence is overwhelming – sign me up, I’m sold’ Gigwise, ‘Glorious...power pop at its finest...we want more, more more!’ Glasswerk, ‘A stunning, multi-layered frenzy of compelling tunes: 12/13’ Room Thirteen

SEEING SCARLET fell from the four corners of Britain and its crumbling Empire (London, Harrogate, Bournemouth and South Africa). The day after flying over from the Southern hemisphere to start sixth form in London, vocalist Charlie Beall met Tom Goodfellow in the boy’s toilet at a girl’s school (the meeting wasn’t planned), and asked him if he could play guitar. Alarmed by Charlie’s soul-pinning stare, Tom nodded – and soon he could. On meeting bassist Jim Bell at his university quarters a couple of years later the three started to hatch plans of forming a band. Further down the line they found Charlie ‘Sticks’ Layton pummelling a drum kit in a room in Old Street, and the final piece fell into place. It didn’t take long for them to develop their live show to the point where it was, in the words of the Music Tourist Board, ‘tighter than Joan Rivers’ face’.

Seeing Scarlet burst onto the live circuit leaving accolades in their wake, then rapidly got to work on their debut limited edition double A-Side single. Response to Ugly Girl / Never Good Enough was immediate: it sold out rapidly and made waves in critical quarters…. “alluring” (Music Week), “stunning” (Room Thirteen), and “glorious” (Glasswerk). MTV2 playlisted the video, which was downloaded from the internet 12,000 times in its first week of release.

Earlier this year the band got busy on a far larger project: recording their magnificent debut album, which is to be released in two parts. Captivating from start to finish and set against a backdrop of melodies that bury themselves deep inside your brain, Mental Notes is a snapshot from their lens, a cross-section sliced from shared experience. It may come as a surprise, then, to know that it was recorded above a pub in Watford run by a bunch of lunatics who hosted Britain’s most unusual open-mic night; between takes the band could wander downstairs to take in the strains of a human beatbox troupe or the songs of Hendrix played on a shiny silver synthesizer. The pub has now been closed down but in the light of its brief candle Seeing Scarlet drowned out the noise downstairs, and Mental Notes was born.

Recording the video for the single Something’s Not Right between two World Cup matches one afternoon this summer, the band stayed a full 9p below budget, racking up total costs of £24.91 (Ketchup 99p, 4 x t-shirts £11.96, roses £8.99, flour 49p, lightbulb 99p, Hair gel £1.49, eyeliner - models own). The video shows the band at their most spontaneous and is now on sale with Part One of Mental Notes.

On record, the passionate intensity that has made such an impact on their audiences speaks for itself. Seeing Scarlet's songs turn on a knife-edge between dark and light, documenting moments of anger, alienation, escapism and wonderment. Like the current issue of The Fly magazine notes, “this power-pop foursome could go far”.

mental note to self: SEEING SCARLET!

Re: SEEING SCARLET

Mar 007 :

Newer wave pop from the dark side...
*
new single Second Time - 7th May
Download (available from seeingscarlet.com and iTunes) & CD
(Moore Brothers Music) ...“You don’t know it yet, but you will be mine..."

Second Time has already been compared to early Muse (Smash Music) and described as having a “gargantuan chorus of epic proportions” (Fuse). It's the second single from Seing Scarlet’s critically acclaimed, Mental Notes (Part One). Their previous single, 'Something's Not Right', picked up 6music airplay and crashed the vote lines on Xfm radio courtesy of Seeing Scarlet fans. “a real chance of being the next big thing” (thisislondon.co.uk)

With a growing word-of-mouth & net following, and increasing interest , the band find themselves one of this new year's tips and have been picking up some astonishingly (but deserved) great reviews.

...And they don't disappoint where it counts. Live on stage. Their intense passion has packed out recent shows. “it wasn’t hard to see what the fuss is about. sharply suited and booted, they dispatched a number of hits in waiting...” “...knees buckle amid rapt fans in the front row..” “...the sort of hooks you could easily imagine being sung back from a muddy festival field” (london lite)

Seeing Scarlet have kept busy recording, writing new material and making the video for Second Time. New shows are being confirmed for the near future, meanwhile, Mental Notes Part One is still being discovered and winning great feedback. The Fly Magazine noted last month : "Like hardened glass these debut songs dazzle as much as they cut and make the promise that there's better to come". Mental Notes Part Two is released in Summer.
CHARLIE BEALL (LEAD VOCALS), JAMES BELL (BASS/VOCALS),
TOM GOODFELLOW (GUITAR/VOCALS), CHARLIE 'STICKS' LAYTON (DRUMS)

Seeing (Scarlet) is believing:
March 21 : Water Rats Theatre (8.30pm), London WC1 supporting Melody Club
April 24 : Outbreak Festival @ Purple Turtle (supporting Brigade)
May 5 : Little Nan Jo Jo Loves... Festival
