Re: Press
Nicky Wire has contributed a song to a forthcoming collection, The Whirled Cup (download/limited August). It features some of the buzziest newer wave artists - The Betes Noires, Chet, The Darling Reds, Dexy, Dolium, Empty Vessels, The Fairies Band, Gear, Hey Gravity!, Innercity Pirates, Jonny Lives!, Korova, Lazyslave, Making Eyes At Elvis, Nebraska, The Needles, Seeing Scarlet, The Veez, White Man Kamikaze and William - at the "Share The Joy" price of a five pounds, so that people get to discover some great alternative bands. His life of wire anthem, 'Ritual No.1' - won't appear on 'I Killed The Zeitgeist', released this Autumn. More info and interviews with the artists here:

Re: Press
Once Upon Another Time (The Whirled Cup)
Aug-006
Ch.4 Teletext :
The first compilation by gig promoters musictouristboard.co.uk had a demo by an unsigned Bloc Party. They show a similar level of talent-spotting here.
An exclusive (and great fun) Nicky Wire song is the commercial draw, but the excitement of hearing the fevered dream of Innercity Pirates, gutter glam from The Darling Reds and gleeful noise by Dexy for the first time is the big joy.
Only £5, which'll be recouped when - not if - one of them gets as big as BP.
8/10

CHAPTER 01 : SEPT / OCT / NOV / DEC 006
Artrocker Magazine album review by Lee Puddefoot ran September 006.
Now up at Artrocker.com October 006
http://www.artrocker.com/reviews/albums/albums277.shtml
With 21 tracks bursting out of its seams, The Whirled Cup goes from the vigorous punk of Gear 'AKA Butcher'; the abrasive ear drum battering riffs come over like The Stooges meets iForward Russia!, the bursts of noise are complemented by the singers apparent duel vocals with himself. William's 'Five Minute Wonder' is the stand out track on the album, singer Gavin cries "if you want me on fire, oh no, oh no, well throw mw in the river" demonstrating his distinctive Malkmus vocals over minimal drumming and off kilter guitar hooks.
Littered with various styles, there's the sub/ska of the cheeky Darling Red's on 'Brand New Thing', bringing two tone and mod together with great effect, The Fairies Band depart from their trademark glam rock sound on 'Colonel Bright' producing a Bloc Party-esque sophisticated pop number. Or perhaps try the strangely alluring Empty Vessels 'You Know' who lurk around the rock boarders with their oddly moody number.
There's an appearance from Manic Street Preachers bassist Nicky Wire with 'Ritual No1'; not totally dissimilar to the Manic's track 'Mr Carbohydrate', he still has the same aloof charm, singing about the mundane over a catchy acoustic guitar and handclaps.
Coming on like a heavier Roger Sisters, Hey Gravity! 'Part Time Punk' is a pogo worthy punk toot and an ode to all the posers out there. Another impressive track is Dexy's 'A Puncture' which is a rather fine alt country/folk combo, with delicate picking, harmonica and heartfelt lyrics "until I work it out, or find the words to say, well I still wont know, where the feeling came".
But not to be outdone, White Man Kamikaze rear their whisky soaked head in the furious punk of 'Discount Leadbelly'. The Needles step in with the garage punk Elvis Costello meets the Hives 'Set My Guitar To The Heart Of Destroy', the big brooding and epic Nebraska swoop over you with the mesmerising 'Grey Spaces'; rumbling bass and soaring vocals proclaim "we only start to understand, when we start to fall apart". And this is just the icing on the cake.

Re: Press
Morning Star Newspaper review (27 Oct 006) of download
+ currently on line at
http://www.morningstaronline.co.uk/index2.php/free/culture/music/bands_on_the_edge
ALBUM: Various Artists - Once Upon Another Time : The Whirled Cup compilation
(POLE/Cargo)
At a time when the major record labels are becoming extinct by the internet download revolution, there are only two choices - sink in a sea of endless x-factor one hit wonders, or surf the digital waves and find something more permanent.
This compilation of new music gives some oxygen to British rock and pop.
Once upon Another Time takes a number of bands on the edge of hitting the big time and gives them some much needed air time.
This is myspace in real time, expressing a new sense of community amongst bands and artists that has existed in other art forms but has been lacking in music. Up until now.
The whole thing is given a wonderful coronation by Nicky Wire's exlusive Ritual No.1.
Highlights include the dub beats of The Darling Reds? Brand New Ting, the dramatic strains of Making Eyes At Elvis and The Veez, and honeyed melodies from the fairies and Cutaways.
On the heavier side of things, Korova's chaotic Just like Peter Cook is complemented by awesome rock collisions by Chet's ?Chet is on Fire?, Hey Gravity's fast and furious Part Time Punk and a heavy duty finale courtesy of Lazyslave's ?Ultraviolence,\\
Don't let the 21 tracks put you off - this is a confection of 3 min instant pop punk gratification, for the same price as a box of chocolates.
