Artful Self Defines - 02: A Family Tree

Planet Water is a family tree.

On New Year's Eve 1999, there was a chance for just one nation, village, or religeon to declare PEACE for a change. The living planet needs it's guardians united right now so that they can have a future.

Instead, the occasion was all about who could spend the most finance on the best fireworks. Since New Year's Day 2001, Planet Earth's story has continued to be largely about money and explosives. The sky is broken, the air and water are polluted. The weather is ****ed. Our faiths used to be united in their reverence for Nature.

On Planet Earth, The Kingdom and The States are only really united in music, arts, humour, charity, lifelong childhood, daydreams, romance and sporting sport - some of the best ambassadors of the human race.

Pop 2000. A parallel dimension. A fully formed modern world concentrating not on history which could not be changed, but on the future. Which can. Perhaps starting with our best attributes...? Saving the planet is a necessity not a trend.

Year 000 - Nature's Children and Guardians. Made rounded and mostly of water - in the image of their world. Unable to live without fresh water, able to swim in, but unable to live IN water. Planet Water, where the compass faces south.

Year 001 started with inspiration from a rock'n'roll adventure in Cuba. L'Habana was so like Deptford in many ways. The year ended with a Share The Joy party, courtesy of The House Of Rock and friends at the Amersham Arms on New Cross Road.

"Who is going to come to New Cross? Nobody." was the advice. But just like in Wayne's World they did in the end. It wasn't packed out, but it was gloriously crazy. They came to party from all over London and even Wales (for The Duvals) and Toby L of Rockfeedback website from High Wycombe. Members of The Duvals also DJd as part of the Unemployable Welsh Scum posse who had recently DJd at the last Manics Convention held by Mary O Meara of Terrible Beauty Zine.

Members of the other bands on the bill went on to join Mika Bomb (or start Must Destroy Records in the case of Ian Johnson of Of Arrowe Hill), Rockfeedback (part of the original Rocklands Grapevine chat list alongside Mary, Drowned In Sound, Must Destroy etc) continues to go from strength to strength (Channel 4 TV recently).

...and it had planted a seed. The Deptford & New Cross Scene has thrived since the 70s and came to the fore in the 80s and and early 90s where it was a birthplace of Britpop (along with Bedford!).

Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Teenage Fan Club, Carter USM, Cornershop, Back To The Planet, Suede, The Bluetones, Supergrass, PJ Harvey, Echobelly, NME On Events (pre Brats) oh, just all sorts happening, let alone the number of alternative alumni that Goldsmiths turns out.

Fordham, the Deptford Urban Free Festival, was so a victim of it's own success, growing so rapidly after a few years (starting with a busking session in the back of a van, to various stages and visitors camping on the park) that it was stopped.

By the mid 90s, South East London was off the cool-bands circuit. The Venue (where the coolest had played) was about cover-bands and, despite having a wealth of artists and musicians as local residents (due to the relative affordability of an allegedly undesirable area).

It was understandable that the idea of putting bands on in South East London was pretty laughable at the the start of the 21st century.

The punky Share The Joy party was not only a night out to remember, but also the start of a family tree. A seed had been sewn...

Year 002 began with cool bands playing South East London! The 80sMatchbox B-Line Disaster and British Sea Power at The Paradise Bar brought a tribe of music journalists, industry and photographers to a half full but wildly buzzing Paradise Bar (the sleeve of the first 80s Matchbox single by Pat Pope).

3 is The Magic Number. On New Year's Day 003, Rocklands Tourist Board was created. In April, Rocklands was declared a republic on the parallel dimension. Once Planet Water was established on Planet Earth the romance and daydreams could begin to weave their spell.

Pop Of The Tops club began at The Paradise Bar between New Cross and Deptford. The people that stepped over the doors on Tuesday evenings created their own future just by hanging out together, whether on or off stage.

Splitting into Rocklands Promotions and Music Tourist Board, the anti-scene collective of however many friends want to be involved continues to party. So thank you to everybody that celebrates Planet Water annually via Artful.

Earth to...

It's probably better to be in isolation otherwise what is going on now probably couldnt have happened.

Drowned In Sound and Rockfeedback probably don't have much to do with the area now it's no longer cool. Everybody probably moves to the West End, Shoreditch and North London.

Having said that, its never a dull moment down there and The Montague Arms is blood mad as anything.

yes it is an area that people move away from to become more successful, but it's always got more people coming along and starting something new

i don't think it could ever be deemed cool in the marketing (i.e. finance) sense of the word, but there's something beyond hip about a load of people too cool to be bothered about being cool. like real is the new cool, for real...

i just like the idea of a load of people have completely different tastes and social circles but still being able to get on, and the co promoting thing between promoters, venues, labels, whatever makes a refreshing change to The Rules
