SOUTH EAST LONDON FOLKLORE SOCIETY

http://www.selfs.org.uk/

SELFS is a monthly meeting  / moot in Greenwich, south east London, which has a different speaker and Q&A each month (except December). The regulars, who're made up of pagans, forteans, folklorists and many others, are a friendly, open-minded and intelligent bunch.

There are talks on a wide range of subjects, from local folklore and paranormal events such as the Deptford Jack-in-the-Green, Southwark witch trials and sacred sites in south London to a broader, eclectic  range of talks covering our interest in paganism, folklore, forteana, high-strangeness and the occult.

Recent talks have included phantom black dogs, suspension and other body rituals, haunted Greenwich, Beltane customs and Spring-heeled Jack.

Journalists and students doing research are welcome to SELFS, we've had quite a few in in our time, so long as you let us know what you're up to. The 10th January 2005 meeting (which was Jeremy Harte talking on fairy lore) was reviewed by Hermione Eyre in the Independent on Sunday Magazine, 16th January.

South East London Folklore Society (SELFS) meet every second Monday of the month upstairs at The Spanish Galleon, 48 Greenwich Church Street, SE10 9BL.

Talks start at 8.00pm. £2.50 / £1.50 concessions. The December moot is free.

The Spanish Galleon, SELFS current venue, is featured in the book Strangest Pubs in Britian, and it is haunted, apparently. It is on a cross-roads and the nearest station is named after a witch (Cutty Sark DLR).

Directions; Greenwich Mainline & DLR: Turn left from the main exit, walk about 5-10 minutes, the Galleon is on your right, at the cross-roads. Cutty Sark DLR: Turn left from the station, right when you get to the road, the Spanish Galleon is across the road.

Buses: 177, 180, 188, 199, 286, 386.
