Despite being one of the smallest in the land, no other university has a comparable range of disciplines at such a high level of national and international excellence, or such a high proportion of illustrious (and sometimes controverersial!) alumni operating within the arts. The kind of university that Rocklands WOULD have, really.

Re: ROCKLANDS GUIDE - contribute your inclusions
This weekend, P.O.L.E. stands for Pirates Of Love. Everywhere!
21st Century Renaissance Revolution. in full swing at X PARTY
the three day party-cum-installation at this year’s Deptford X.
http://www.myspace.com/x_party
Since the first Artful established this creative bohemian hotspot as The South East Bank last October, unity between many art and music gangs has created even more collectives and collaborations with more live music at art and festival events this year.
The eight year old contemporary art festival, Deptford X, has a fine reputation on the international calendar. X Party (23-25 November) is the loudest installation so far.
Nana JoJo loves X Party. Three days at the revamped New Cross Inn, decor by the Lead Pipe collective and friends, a projected gallery by 1353 Magazine, films and filming by Digital Sneakers, party DJ sets by Lead Pipe DJs, Earwax Radio and ****ney J. Live performaces from The Rank Deluxe (punk), The Alps (newer wave), The Total Drop (art pop) and Forms Forms Forms (powerpop), The Readymades (artrock), Lee Hodkinson (spoken word), Rufus & Lewis (pyshadelic), photos and photography by Satoko Owada, plus the Deptford X artists, people in/with bands, fairies, pirates, x people and their friends.
It’s a celebration of what London’s South East X is becoming through magic, myth, mayhem and esepcailly music. The borough of Lewisham has had a “scene” for decades. This decade, the effect that affordable access to communication and creative technlogy has had on the penniless - mixed with the unique character of the locality has created a virtual republic in a parallel dimension to Planet Earth’s 51st state.
Rocklands
The best known map landmark (see Eastenders), opposite Docklands.
Completely round the bend. (of the River Thames)
Across from Canary Wharf is Deptford Fun City, home of the original jolly roger. It’s still a veritable pirates cove as you can’t really see if from the river. The every day folk of this riverside settlement with the huge sea faring history, have to go to Greenwich for river views. Yet they are the area’s buried treasure.
The struggling artists, creative entrepreneurs, DIY non-economy of the skint, unsigned bands, enterprising immigrants, energetic students, the friendly nutters... It’s over populated and now developers want to add “luxury accomodation” dwellers on top. So they need to increase the green spaces and river views, for the general population, for balance and sanity.
The densely packed humanity live in relative peace (so far) until prices rise to high for a working class, non-working class population. It is the green spaces and birdsong, the pedestrianised residential areas and the amount of outdoor art, regular things to do that retain some sanity.
It’s necessary that this Havana on the Costa del Thames remains affordable so that it can blossom as a creative haven that can support promising talent. With so many creative industries on the door-stop, local people could help themselves. The potential for positivity is enormous. Corporate greed could spoil the vibe, but corporate willingness to listen to, and share with every day people could create something completely different, in a completely different creative place.
The vibe is a hint of 60s love and peace, 1970s Glastonbury and Rock Against Racism, 80s raves, 90s melting-pot of music and naughties spirit of hope. For a change. Music fans have really made a difference on their own present and future. It is the tale that begins; Once Upon Another Time.
