South East X inspired by Artful No.1 (005) and Artful No.2 (006). This year's event (No.3, Year 007) includes the one year celebration of the revamped New Cross Inn. Details as follows
New Cross Inn
Happy 1st Birthday - Saturday October 20th
The Story So Far
Did you hear the one about the artists that turned their imagination to running a bar? That'll be Kate Wolfdenden and Tristan Scutt who took over the reins at New Cross Inn last year, revamped it, relaunched it and made the surreal utopian spirit of "Rocklands" a reality.
In that short time, this venue has become the new "CBGBs of SE14" (as NME called Paradise Bar), and then some. It's an art gallery bar where band members, zines, photographers, artists, students and friendly nutters, galore hang out, put up stalls, show visuals, make new pals and exchange experimental ideas. It's also witnessed some wild'n'wondeful live performances and DJ sets (* scroll down).
X-Party, a living art rock installation, recently featured on the digital TV stations. A gift of free pancakes to locals in February packed the place out with non-cynical enthusiasm, resulting in over thirty, sussed, new-music promoters getting involved with the Inn.
These music fans and rising star bands, joined forces to create Little Nan JoJos, a one-day festival this May Bank Holiday. South East London's wavelength is based on trust, a con-man took advantage of this so they cancelled it. On the morning of May 1st there wasn't a single band coming to play.
The warm feeling for New Cross Inn, among many in the music community, is such that by the evening of May 1st, there were over sixty bands who just declared "we're gonna come and play for you, anyway". If anybody believes that the spirit of rock'n'roll is dead then think again.
May 5th was not only a complete sell-out with bands and their friends/followings partying all day and all night at united venues across New Cross and Deptford, as well as impromptu gigs, and a boost for other local businesses, but also a continuance of the original Glastonbury Festival vibe. The art mix in South East London just keeps risiing every year, and the The Inn has played a massive part in that.
The success has created a wave of fresh interest in the borough of Lewisham(bles) which has inspired a soon-to-launch new, alternative destination for locals and visitors alike, new venues and entertainment business have been attracted to the area, and The Inn also now has a sister venue, Deptford Arms, which has brightened up the High Street of SE8 as the bohemian community's watering hole cum gallery.
New Cross Inn and Deptford Arms are also HQ for this year's Artful Festival which takes place between October 1st and 31st on land and on line. The celebration for a year of New Cross Inn of Rocklands takes place on Saturday 20th October - expect bands galore on and off the stage!
* Aside from the number of bands / promoters / zines / artists / dreamers and other future-makers that come to drink, chill and mingle, some wild'n'wondeful live performances and DJ sets that have graced New Cross Inn since last October include; Fighting ****s, Party Shank, Twisted Charm, 1984, Pink Grease, The Total Drop, Eddie Temple Morris, Earwax Radio, We Smoke Fags, Heath, The Pepys, The Rank Deluxe, 586, Pop Levi, Kunt & The Gang, The Alps, The Veez, Plugs, Babyshambles, Metros, White Man Kamikaze, New Young Pony Club, The Rocks, Nebraska, Blah Blah Blah, Popular Workshop, Bono Must Die, Seeing Scarlet, Rattyrat Rat, Kiara Scuro, Bolt Action Five, Kalev, Blue Bambinos, Super Nashwan, Guardians Of The Ancient Wisdom, Dexy, Metronomy, Kunt & The Gang, Sharing Sheaths, Fatels, The Pistolas, Friends Of The Bride, Talk Taxis, Sports Day Megaphone, Airhammer... to name a few.
Basically, a hang out with all kindsa talents and ideas but without all kindsa airs and graces.
The celebration is on Saturday 20th October at
