Aug. 17, 2006
AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn soccer team was picked to finish second in the competitive SEC West division in a preseason vote by the league's 12 head coaches, the league office announced on Thursday. The Tigers received four out of the 12 first-place votes in the West.
Tennessee was picked to win both the East and the Overall title, picking up eight first-place votes in both categories. Others receiving overall champion votes were Florida (three) and Georgia (one).
Coming off of an 8-12-1 season that saw the Tigers' run of four straight SEC West titles and four consecutive NCAA Tournament berths come to an end in 2005, the Tigers will have to mesh 12 freshmen with 13 returning players. Leading the returnees are seniors All-American Ronda Brooks, Amanda Garcia, Jac Schwarz, Kristin Stewart and Jenny Zarzour while the incoming class was ranked 17th in the nation by SoccerBuzz.
Ole Miss was selected first in the West with 57 total points compared to Auburn's 50 points. Following the Tigers was LSU (43 points), Alabama (31), Arkansas (24) and Mississippi State (11).
In the East, Tennessee earned 57 points, edging Florida's 52 points and three first-place votes. Georgia was next with 42 points and one first-place vote followed by Vanderbilt (32), Kentucky (20) and South Carolina (13).
Points were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division, though each coach was not allowed to vote for his or her own team. Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.
