NEW EQUALITY ON DISCIPLINE

The Football Association are set to pilot plans that will shake up grassroots football's disciplinary system across the board.
Soho Square have revealed to my contact that a decision has been made to introduce match-based suspensions for players in Step 7 from next month.
The FA are determined to finally do-away with the controversial 'day bans' and are stepping up their attempts to install one standard discipline system from the top of the game to the very bottom - including Sunday parks football.

As it stands, any players below Step 6 are banned for a period of time rather than for a specific number of matches. A sending-off for abusive lanquage, for example, results in an automatic 35-day sidelining in any league below Step 6. Above that, a three-match ban comes into play.

I understand The FA disciplinary manager Mark Ives explained that changes are afoot after six leagues from all over the country have agreed to test-drive new procedures. Ives was quoted as saying, "For years people have been asking why is it that a player gets sent off on Match of the Day in the Premier League and it's a one-, two- or three-match suspension, while grassroots players commit the same offence and he has to sit out for five weeks". "They say that can't be fair and they're right. For the last few years we have wanted to try and address the problem and now we are".

I'm aware that three years ago the system was successfully trialled at Step 6 and Step 7 and they now work under the match-based guidelines.
I understand that six leagues have volunteered to trial the scheme. Four Saturday Leagues - the Suburban League, who host many Conference teams' reserve sides, the West Riding, the Cambridgeshire Saturday league and the Herefordshire & District division - have volunteered. Sunday Leagues Bedfordshire & District and the Northome Counties have also volunteered to help.

This is a massive shake-up and a great opportunity to re-shape how discipline is dealt with within football. This will bring equality to the game. and it can't come soon enough.
