a couple general questions for Claudio:

Since you're in the biz, and I like to collect I wanted to run a few questions by you.

1. You said if more than 200 Tarot statues are made, it is no longer a museum quality piece. Who dictates these standards and how?

2. I see a lot of pieces come out, especially from Marvel of characters I don't think many people care about, or would bother to buy. I.E. a Grey Gargoyle or Baron Blood bust. So why does so much of stuff like that get done?

3. What do you think the 5 best statues/busts are that are out there?

4. What 4 or 5 characters would you really like to get a chance to sculpt?

and 1 I forgot!

I've seen busts based on Alex Ross' work. Could artwork like Greg Horn's be duplicated in statue form?

1) You can do more then 200 pieces and still have a "Museum Quality" piece per se (Sideshow does this) its just not considered "Fine art" and is mass produced at that point. This goes for prints and photos as well according to VARA (A Fine arts Organization).

Everyone gets their statues made overseas but we doe everything in-house so we prefer making fewer and keeping the value higher in the long term.

We only made one statue overseas (Dirt) because we had to (for various reasons) and from that point on we made a solemn vow to NEVER do that again! She came out fine but not to our standards where I am concerned.

I don't see the point of doing things like everyone else.

If we, as a company, have nothing new to contribute then I won't bother making anything...

So we decided our approach is to offer something that is not mass produced but still accessible to the average Joe (like myself- I'm a collector first) and to do things that we would like to see done as opposed to things everyone else is doing... emoticon

2) Beats me man! emoticon
I think people saw how well Bowen was doing and decided to jump on the band wagon. I think this goes for a lot of licenses.

It seams everyone is doing Star Wars, LOTR, Terminator, Predator, Aliens etc. I like weta because they are doing some original stuff too like the Ray Guns etc.

Personally I'd love to Sculpt a Kate Spencer as "Manhunter" from DC but only because I really like the character and I doubt they will make one... I have some friends that work for DC and they don't think it will happen (you never know though!).

3) That is pretty Tough! There is a lot of great work out there. I can give you some of my personal favourites though...

- Witchblade Anime statue Masane Amaha

- Shunya Yama****a "Rei" sculpted by Reflect

- "Cammy" Street Fighter Zero by reflect (just got this one!)

- "Poizon" by Reflect

- "Nina Darkness" by Fewture Models (I own this one too)

- Volks "Rei Ayanami" 1/4th scale statue

- Gore group Captain America for Sideshow

-Ray Villafane's Wolverine for Sideshow.

Honestly there are so many that I like and mostly from Japanese companies... I really like Anime statues.

4) I mentioned Kate Spencer as Manhunter already.

Then there is Re-L Mayer from Ergo Proxy.

I'd love to sculpt a large scale (1/4th) Masane Amaha figure from the Witchblade Anime.

-Sam Fisher (Splinter Cell games)

-Huntress from DC

Of course I would like to continue the line with Broadsword comics... I was mentioning characters outside of Broadsword... there are a lot of characters from Tarot and 3 Kittens I'd like to make...

Sincerely,
Claudio

Thanks for your answers!

Sam Fisher would be awesome. And if you ever do a Huntress I would be first in line to grab that.

I like anime statues as well.
I have a couple pieces of Shunya Yama****a's work, his Shi'i Arigusawa was great. Most of my pieces are Ryomou Shimei from Ikki Tousen. I got the Hitomi from Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball since I love that character and it's a gorgeous piece but the other DOA Extreme statues don't look good at all.
I think Kotobukiya's "Ninja Gaiden" pieces were great. I have the Rachel statue and really want to get my hands on the Ayane statue.

I am very excited for the Catwoman vinyl statue from Kotobukiya.

I have the Ryomu Shimei by Reflect as well as Sonsaku Hakufu from another company... I think Yamato. I like Ryofu Housen and I'd like to find the Version made by Griffon...

I think the only White queen based on Greg Horn's work is the one sculpted by Clayburn Moore For Dynamic Forces...

I'm not familiar with Keith Garvey... emoticon

Toki Doki will probably do some large format figures at some point on their own. I doubt we will do urban vinyl as there are many other companies that do it better (like Toki Doki) emoticon

I have the Ryomou Shimei from Griffon! Cost me well over a hundred dollars for as tiny as it is, but it is a sexy piece of work!!

Keith Garvey..check out www.stickerchick.com for some of his work. I am sure you'll recognize it!

I think the only 2 statues made based on Greg's artwork is the Modern version White Queen sculpted by Clay Moore and there is a Daredevil kneeling at elektra's grave statue that I think was done exactly as a sketch Greg did. I may be mistaken....my memory isn't so great after drinking a few!
