The zombies from I am Legend freaked me out. Not exactly sure if zombie is the correct term to use for describing whatever those things were, but they gave me the CREEPS!

I still haven't seen that. I'm wary of seeing movies based on books, because they usually disappoint. Was it good?

Common misconception... the ghouls (ghouls is an acceptable term for any type of unknown creature eg. vampires, zombies, or werewolves) in the 28 days series are actually a by-product of project R.A.Y.G.E. (rage.) In the series they are never referred to as zombies (don't use the zed word.) However the "of the dead" series is more closely related to the Solanum virus, with the exception of "Land of the Dead" which is just silly.

I never read I am Legend. My husband listened to the audio book and said there is no relationship between the book and the movie, but he also went on to say he enjoyed them both.
Its my understanding that the book has been made into at least 3 different movies, The Omega Man, The Last Man on Earth, and I am Legend.
I too dislike seeing movies that are based on books I've read. I know lots of people who really enjoy the Harry Potter movies but I can't stand them - I'd rather stay home and re-read the books.

*nodnod* I felt that way about Nightwatch and Daywatch, and about The Golden Compass. The books and the movies were two totally different animals, that were really only related in that they were set in a similar world. If one of my novels ever gets published, and made into a movie, I think it'll give me hives. 
So, is this solanum virus actually real? I'd be curious to read an article in a scientific journal about what's being done to study it, if so.

Lots of Answers:
1. Solanum is not "real", it is just the term used to refer to traditional zombies.
2. Solanum was first used in "The Zombie Survival Guide" written by Max Brooks (Mel Brooks' son.)
3. The creatures in "I Am Legend" were vampires.
4. Steve Niles did an amazing adaptation of "I Am Legend" in comic form.
5. It is also my birthday!
