Commissioned Tarot Art?!

Jim and Holly,

I've already sent you an e-mail about this but I thought it might be a good idea to bring this up here. Somebody commissioned Lan Medina to do a pencil rendering of Tarot over at comiconart.com. Doesn't Medina need your permission to do that, even if he changes details of Tarot's outfit so that it's not an out-and-out recreation of your work? It's not exactly a representation of Tarot that we've seen either. emoticon

If you mean Tarot, she's basically standing in front of someone(human) laid out on an altar, the BRC sword dripping . The Raven Hex pencil has her laying down on a Leopard-skin rug. The Tarot one implies (IMO) that she had sacrificed the guy and Raven's, well, would she reallllly have a animal skin rug?! Just going by what I know of Tarot and Raven Hex, I'd have to say resoundingly NO!

Now that's just cruel to totally rape the characters like that for her own profit and gain. Whether you can pursue legal action with copyright issues or not, I for one am boycotting that artist from now on.

AH! But the question is was it for profit? I think that Star Wars characters are a bit more up for things like commissions where as You and Jim are protective of your works. Other artists should respect that IMO.

Yeah, the profit thing is a big difference. I know, Holly, you include it in your "Yeah, I drew that", but those are portraits of the actors, playing/dressed as a character. The difference to me is that Tarot is a character created in a medium where she is only represented through art/drawings/sketches, and therefore her image is copyright to Broadsword, as is her concept. You can't copyright an actor's face, but you have a very clear copyright paragraph on the inside cover of all books, stating that no portion of the comic may be reproduced etc. etc....and that means the characters and the storylines and the lines/dialogue. Anyway, it bugs me to see someone else being so disrespectful.

Bringing this one back up: There's been another commissioned piece rear its head on comiconart.com! This one is of Tarot and Raven Hex together and this time, drawn by a newer artist(Leno Carvalho) to the site. Just by looking at it, it appears that he doesn't know that Tarot and Raven are sisters. Why can't these people get it?????? emoticon emoticon

Ya' know.....if I didn't know better, I'd think whoever's comissioning these pieces is actually a member of this Forum! Time to Scrye!
