'Speed' Review

Speed : Special Edition (DVD)

Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock, Dennis Hopper, Joe Morton, Jeff Daniels, Alan Ruck

I remember when Jan De Bont’s “Speed” was announced.
It sounded even-handed, but nowhere near as dandy as
the finished product. What I knew was that Keanu Reeves
played a guy who had to stop a Bus. Thing is, the Bus was
equipped with a bomb that would explode if the bus went
under 55 mph and so the bus had to maintain “speed”.
Never in my wildest dreams, did I expect something so
utilitarian to kick some much butt and then some.

“Speed” is not only one of the 90’s finest moments in action
cinema – but one of the decade’s most enjoyable fast-

paced thrillers. Reeves is Jack Traven a hotshot L.A.P.D swat

team specialist who’s the only hope for the passengers of
the aforementioned Bus. Sandra Bullock, in what was her

first major film role, is the Bus’s driver, Annie, and the

always unswerving Dennis Hopper, imposing as the psychotic
operate at the other end of the bomb button.

What makes “Speed” so great is that it takes a simple idea,

jazzes it up with some finely choreographed action

sequences and a screenplay brimming with tension and grit.

Reeves' acting was superb, but when he’s in a movie as
good as this, it’s hardly a problem, for him to be as quick

witted as he was, as his lines just rolled off his tongue

naturally.

The Special edition 2-disc “Speed” is a delight for anyone

who likes their discs packed with supplemental materials.

On the first disc, there’s Director Jan De Bont’s audio

commentary, and on Disc 2 there’s five featurettes, five

extended scenes, an image gallery, some multi angle

sequences, multi stream storyboards, cast and crew

interviews, a HBO making-of special, Trailers and TV

spots, a Billy Idol music video and the obligatory,
Easter egg.

A multitude of information – too much at times – but a

release well worth slotting away in the home library.
