Matrix, The (1999) - Thomas A. Anderson - Neo
The defining role in Reeves's career to date. He plays Neo - software technician by day, computer hacker by night, and, although he doesn't yet know it, a sort of latter-day messiah. Crammed with ground-breaking special effects, the film subsequently touches on issues of philosophy and theology - how convincingly is open to question - and spawned two similarly massive sequels.
