Make Your Own Desert Spa!
Make Your Own Desert Spa!
In the desert, it can be hard to find a diverse array of cosmetics to pamper yourself with. But you can make your own spa treatments, using kitchen ingredients. Homemade cosmetics, the old-fashioned kind your granny used to make, are fresher and healthier for your skin, than products with chemicals in them to expand their shelf lives. For instance, you can have a fabulous facial buy combining in a bowl, 1 egg yolk, plus 2 T. egg white, plus 1 T. honey and 1 t. rose water. Beat together and then apply to the face. Let stand for 10-15 minutes. Remove with warm water. This is especially refreshing. After the facial, spritz your face with toner made from 1/2 c. distilled witchhazel, 1/2 c. rose (or lavender) water, and 3/4 t. vegetable glycerine (these ingredients can be found at most pharmacies, health food stores, and online at sites like www.sagewomanherbs.com). Shake well before each use, and spray or pat on face when feeling dry.
Another easy home cosmetic is *nonpetroleum jelly*, or fake vasoline. In the top of a double boiler, with water simmering underneath, melt/stir together 1 1/4 oz. grated beeswax and 3/4 c. almond oil. Remove from heat and pour into containers. Use for dry, cracked feet or gardeners' hands, chapped lips, or for lip gloss base. For firmer gel, use 1 1/2 oz. beeswax. For softer gel, 1 oz bees wax. Or make your own *aloe vera gel*, to soothe irritated or burned skin, or to use as hairstyle gel, etc. Slit open an aloe leaf, scape the inner gel into a bowl with a sharp knife, then put it in a blender or food processor and blend until smooth. Dilute with water until it is as thick as you want it. Keep the aloe gel in the refrigerator.
Or treat yourself to luxurious homemade bath salts. (These make nice gifts too). Mix 4 cups epsom salts, with 2 c. sea salt, and 3/4 c. baking soda, then add 25 drops each of lemon and lavender essential oils, plus 15 drops each of orange and peppermint essential oils. Mix together and use 1 cup per bath to relax. Another nice-smelling combination is to add 10 drops each of eucalyptus, clove, peppermint, and lemon essential oils to 2 cups combination of epsom salts, sea salts and soda...As with all cosmetics and herbal products, test on small parts of skin first to avoid allergic reactions. I am fair skinned and have have personally used all of these recipes without any problem. Enjoy! And remember, you are more beautiful than you ever imagined!
