Hey, Slim. Do you know any places that you can actually be taught by a professional anywhere near Texas? I am really needing to know, it would help a great deal. Thank you.
Cody.

Cody, I don't know off hand anyone specific to Texas.. Keep looking, many seekers travel great distances for a good teacher... Some even international. We teach in "America's Finest City" Do it for free, offer food and lodging. and teach all the arts, including some lost ones.. What are you looking for? House calls?

Can we set up an index of teachers of sideshow acts/arts? They must be serious, teach the methods, instill the student with the dangers inherent in the acts, set prices, understand what they are teaching, and be able to assess the student. A student should be able to really respect what is being taught, know the dangers and the history.
I would be willing to act as a central point, willing to provide connections between student and teacher and try to winnow out the "See what I can do's" from the serious...

I am very, very serious about this. I want to learn some things, but they are just to dangerous to self tutor, so I am seeking help.

I'd like to add that Slim is a good teacher. It may not seem like Slims saying much, but by the time you leave, you'll have copious notes, and many ideas of where to take the acts. Plus ones that are almost forgotten. He asks for nothing, but your time and willingness to learn. Just don't forget to say thanks.

That's very kind of you both. Not many people would make an offer like that.

Thgis is part of an essay by Mark Frierson... This is the sme way I see our responsibility.
Slim

There are a lot of young people that want to get a break, find someone to mentor them, and help them get a start in the sideshow. What do they need to know today to get a start in the business?
. My take on this is, that the sideshow art, whether it is performing, banner painting, or gaff building is definitely a coveted art form. It's like the skills and secrets of a magician. They should never just be given away randomly to whomever. They shouldn't be sold, it's something that should be definitely passed down to someone as an apprentice, a person should seek out someone to instruct them and help them as a mentor. Then the mentor can see that they are genuine, See that the individual isn't there for the wrong reasons or just because they think it’s cool and they think they are going to be hip if they know how to do these things and can impress their friends. If a person wants to continue the art form they should do it because they believe in its historical legacy and are doing something personally to ensure that it is not going to die out. It has been passed on in this manner from one person to another, much like some cultures have done for many years to preserve their history. This is how it should be done. Today with the technology the way it is, we have the Internet and other ways where people can find things out. If they gain the knowledge and then use it for their own selfish reasons or because of greed, it is very, very wrong. Some people have a limited knowledge and then try to use it for themselves or to teach others. Without the proper training these things can be extremely dangerous. They are setting themselves, and those people whom they try to teach, up to get hurt and potentially setting themselves up for lawsuits. I'm speaking of performing the skills of the various acts like fire eating and sword swallowing. Granted these things have their roots in science and physics. If they are practiced and done correctly they are relatively harmless. However, if you do anything the wrong way, it can either harm you permanently or kill you. There are many sideshow acts that could be potentially fatal or cause bodily scaring and alter your anatomy in ways that you will never be able to repair. There are a lot of kids out there today that see these things and think, “That looks so easy, I can do that.” They sometimes end up hurting themselves and others.

I agree whole heartedly!

I have trained over 35 people in 12 years...and the only way I will train ANYONE is if they have a burning need to perform to the best of their abilities. I have a screening process that scares away potential 'Joy Riders' from learning...its a 10 question Quiz. If they answer ALL 10 questions properly they can be taught. These questions are not easy to answer...and are made to turn you off of show biz forever. But if you have the fortitude to answer them properly...you may have a seat in the small and elite world we call Sideshow.

I was taught by my grandfather, and a small handfull of ol'tyme showmen that could see that I was working in the best interests of the industry.
I have gained valuable knoweledge over the years because of my dilegence and seriouse stance on the subject.

I applaud you Slim on wanting to teach without the need of money changing hands. I have never taught anyone for money. People that are taught by us are now working pros in the industry.

One day Slim we have got to meet...I am sure that we will have many hours of enjoyment cutting up jackpots about the past.

As have often said, our door is always open! This is actually true, Krista and I seldom even close the door to our cluttered, smoke-filled home, and I don't even know where the key is... It has been like that for many years... Once in a while the pro's drop by as well as occcasional seekers. What a privilege for a cranky old man...
