Slim Sideshow, Living Legend

We have been honoured with the presence of a living legend, Mr. Slim Price. Slim started in the business at age 14, and has been a fireeater, snake handler, magician, sword swallower, bally, escape artist, and author.

Ask him about the Coney Island Sideshow, which included Dewise Purdon, the Armless Wonder, Joanna The Bear Girl and Alzoria The Turtle Girl, Bob Melvin The Two Faced Man, and Frank Lentini The Man With Three Legs.

Ask him about his Magic Good Luck Hat, Alex Linton or Shumpert Eko, who swallowed one of the earliest neon swords. If there is anything about sideshow you are curious about, Slim is an exceptional resource to ask.

I think a lot of people here are curious, but don't know what to ask. So here's my question.

Slim, what's the most misunderstood thing about sideshow?

I will watch this thread and answer as I can. First, I think that there is an assumption that sideshow performers have lower morals than others, and that they are second class in some way. From my beginnings (1949) until today, almost without exception the reverse has been obvious. Getting outside the mold requires intelligence, daring, an ability to stand in the face of those who need to determine for others "the way you ought to be," and an endurance a little above the standard... The other thing is that sideshow acts are a way to make "an easy buck."

Agreed, with Diablo I have experienced some of the most hard-working and honorable people there are. I have had performers talk about their 'need' to perform, regardless of pay. They love to entertain and educate, it's their primary focus.

I spent a summer touring with Conklin shows, and was amazed at the family atmosphere and support the ride-owners families had for one another. Most people complain about 8 hr work days, and these families are out there 18 hours a day trying to make a go of it.

...and an update. We are going to be celebrating Halloween in our beloved Toronto, (instead of Edmonton) with a 5 hr TV special. Please consider joining us, as the Diablo family will all be together, and we would love to have you there.
