Fire bad...

I have to echo Nikolai's caveat regarding fire:

quote:

...You haven't been burnt... yet. But I can assure you that everyone that plays with fire eventually gets a taste of the heat.

If you work with fire, you will feel its kiss one day.

I have to add my own warning; 50/50 cotton/polyester is a bad idea. Polyester melts when it catches fire, and as such sticks to skin and continues to burn the skin even after extingusted as the melted plastic is still hot. Stop, drop and roll will put the fire out, but will make the problem worse. 100% Cotton all the way. Denim, hemp, linnen and woll are fine too.

As far as a bystander with an extinguisher; be sure it is a CO2 extinguisher. NOT PYRENE. That's the white powder kind. That will also put out the fire, but will also burn your skin. Water will not put out most flammable chemicals used in fire handling as they float on water.

   Things to think about.

Natural Resources Canada - Explosives Regulatory Division offers a pyrotechnic safety course and federal certification that is not only a good idea to take, but is now required by an evergrowing number of municipalities. While pyrotechnics are mostly unrelated to fire-eaters, the safety protocol is related. Similar courses are offered in the United States as well, for those of you that are stateside.

If you play with fire, do so responsibly. Ensure your safety and that of your audience. No-one needs another "Great White".

Re: Pics of Me,

Why does fire seem to be the most commonly imitated and abused sideshow feat? It's sooooo dangerous. It's not about the 1000 times you do it right. It's about the 1 time you do it wrong.

Re: Pics of Me,

Fire Bad had 2nd degree burns to my chest not from fire but from the sun & then while recovering from that had the burn stuff on me & sat to close to the fire at a campfire & well lets just say I caught on fire same place ...& well it took 4 years to completely heal & now when im in the sun have to wear 45 on my chest & a hat due fer that reason area is still senstive & will be fer a long time (maybe rest of life)
DONT PLAY WITH FIRE!
Being in pain fer 4 years not fun & watching yer skin boil & bubble well not fun.
I dont like really being in the sun at working stampede all in black was brutal got a burn though my mask but still it was face not chest but still it did burn & hurt.
I have a burn on my wrist as well from fire ..scar still there..thing is I have a really high threshold fer pain so when the burn was bubbling & peeling I was in pain but its was numbing ..only when i saw the blood well blood & pain = more pain...i only started to feel it after I saw the blood. Ive picked up many a time hot pan from stove with metal & not felt it right away.. high pain as well I used to do bad things when i was young no drugs but painful hurtful things I wasnt happy as a kid..so high pain theshold from that .

BUT AGAIN LONG STORY SHORT ...DONT DO IT !!

The major problem in America as far as fire shows and there recent reglementation is directly related to one of these bands. I don't expect you heard about the incident in Rhode Island involving fire and numerous deaths.

Everything in that show was wrong, not just low ceilings. The pyrotechnician was not certified, the club had just been soundproofed with a substance that was similar to a sponge dipped in gasoline. Dust in the rigging, polyester tablecloths on tables, chains on some of the exits and security preventing people from using the exit used by the band. I don't recall exactly how many people died, but it was a lot.

This is one incident. There are others, less extreme, that I have personally witnessed in the 18 years I have been doing fire shows. Most of which involve fire eaters using the wrong chemicals or wrong technique and problems relating to these mistakes.

The Rhode Island incident is the one that scares authorities and is the one that inspired the recent crackdown. If individuals srew-up - that's your own choice. But you have to consider that when you do an act like that in public, that you are responsible for everyone in the audiences' lives.
