Are tattoos a sin?
I have been wonderin if tattoos are a sin. In the Bible (my sister says) it says not to mark your body and pierce it. Does that mean if you get one, is it a sin? Please let me know what you think. Cause i am wantin to get a tattoo. But i dont know if i should or not.

Re: Are tattoos a sin?
see God & Tattoos...the neverending battle.
Tattoos are not a sin...unless you feel they are. Is that how YOU feel? I am not alking about your sister or even what I thin...how do you feel about it?
The passage she is referring to is Leviticus 19:28. Go read the passage and then pray about it...see how you feel.
This is a VERY long and complicated asnwer but I have just given you the gist of it.
Hope this helps...I am sure others will have their input as well.

Re: Are tattoos a sin?
I have always liked tattoos, when I finally moved out and went off to bible college I got one. Then I got another. My dad's a pastor and he would always throw that laviticus scripture on me. As I learned in bible school that scripture is in the old covenent.
When Jesus died for our sins we began the new covenent. If you're familiar with jack Deere, he spoke on this subject and when asked about them he basically said it depends what you get. If your getting a devil or a naked girl thats when it's not good. I ended up getting him to translate one of my tattoos into greek. Ephesians 4:1

Re: Are tattoos a sin?
Totally right on these replies are why I love this site so much! I am in Bible college too and when I first got saved and began doing my Bible study each night I kept on thinking "Man that would make a cool tattoo" and that is when the Holy Spirit told me that until I can go through my Bible study and read it like the love letter that He intended it to be, then No more tattoos. I thought about the convivtion laid upon me and after I began to grow in my relationship with the Father and to love the Word because of His heart in it, that conviction lifted.
Now my ink isn't just art it is part of my testimony and a great way to minister to the lost! Just my personal experience with Lovin Jesus and liking ink.

Re: Are tattoos a sin?
Big questions deserve big answers lol. I'm new here btw pleased to meet you all. I think marking of the body is and will always be considered a sin unless done in celebration of god and his gifts. That's a bit vague but it can go along ways. Are all the tattoos declaring faith a sin? No I don't believe so. But with all things , literally ALL things, you can just ask god , he'll give ya the answer. Portraying faith permanently on skin for others to see and to remind yourself, is the ultimate physical sign of belief, to me anyhow. Does that mean all non-religious tattoos are sins? Maybe not. Maybe celebrations of freedoms with our bodies is the same as celebrating life given by god? One in the same in my opinion. Love's the key. But that's just me.

Re: Are tattoos a sin?
I agree wholeheartedly with every reply so far. Weren't "tattoos"(marks on skin) a sign that you were a slave? someone "property?" So in that context, it is a sin to have marks on your body because it symbolized that you belonged to someone else, and not God.
But since we're talking about tattoos to express our love/faith in the Lord, its all g yo.
At least, thats what i think. I could be completely wrong on this though

Re: Are tattoos a sin?
i think it all depends, like other what God places on your heart. The other day i was considering a snake bite pirceing on my lip, i was questioning it though. then the very day i did, i read Mark 16:18 they will pick up snakes with their hands; and they will drink their poison they will drink deadly poison, and not be harmed so the pirceing will remind me that if i have God by my side i cannot be harmed, so jsut pray and read

Re: Are tattoos a sin?
I am new to this site, which is very cool, and to having a tattoo. I've had one for a month and I'm 46. I wanted one but never knew what or where I wanted to put it. I finally had a revelation while on vacation while reading the book "Blue Like Jazz". I had a Fender Telecaster guitar body with a cross for a neck done on the inside of my left forearm. I had it done so that I was reminded of why I play guitar and for who, Chirst. I had reservations but am pleased to say that it has been a total blessing. I have witnessed to more people in the last month than I had in the past 10 years! I believe the other posts that it is not a sin if your intent is to glorify God. I didn't do it for any other reason than to remind me who my savior is (I'm a sinner and need reminded!!) and for who I am playing music. I have had mixed initial reactions on the tattoo but after explaining what the tattoo means to me, most people are cool with it.
God's peace to you all!
Greg
