letting it grow back in...
Hi. I have an 8 gauge conch piercing and I've been wondering what will happen if I let it grow in... Does cartilage grow back? I thought that it doesn't but I'm having trouble finding something that just tells me straight whether it does or not... So what would it look like if I let it grow back? Will there just be an 8 gauge indentation? And if not let it grow in completely, is it possible for me to let it shrink to a smaller size?
I may completely change my mind about making it smaller/ growing it in altogether... but I haven't been able to find answers and you guys were really great when I was there so I thought that maybe you could help me out...
Thanks!

Re: letting it grow back in...
Cartilage does not grow back. The surrounding tissue may grow into or cover around the piercing, but the hole thru your cartilage is forever.
Depending on what gauge you were pierced at and how fast you may have stretched and how long you've had the piercing at 8g, the opening of the piercing may shrink down to the 'practically unnoticable' stage, but there is no definative timeline for something like that... it will depend greatly on your body and how it heals.
Time and only time will tell how it will look, but for the most part you will always see the impression of the piercing. You should be able to wear smaller gauge jewelry... say a 14g post with 5 mm balls (so it doesnt pull thru the piercing). Eventually, you may also be able to wear typical post earrings in it.

Re: letting it grow back in...
hmm. thank you very much! While I'm asking questions... I've been wondering what the bump on the back of my conch is. It's kind of around the piercing. It's never been painful so I didn't worry about it, but it's been there for a long time (which I guess might be a problem when it comes to fixing it)... what might it be? And is there anything I can do that will decrease it/ make it go away?
Also... if I decide to decrease the gauge, do I only need to put in a smaller piece of jewelry? Should it be a gradual transition? Or can I just put in a 12 or 14 gauge CBR and wait?
Thank you very much!!

This is an excellent link that provides a lot of information about the different types of "bumps" associated with piercings:
What's this Bump on My Piercing?
You should be able to wear smaller gauge jewelry as long as the balls on it are larger then the piercing.
