War archive to go online


London - A huge British archive of World War II aerial reconnaissance photos, including pictures of the D-Day landings in Normandy, is to go on the Internet on Monday.

Under the digitalisation project, about 5 million Royal Air Force photos of Western Europe will be available to the public on the Web site www.evidenceincamera.co.uk., archivists said.

"These images allow us to see the real war at first hand - as if we are RAF pilots," said Allan Williams, head of the aerial reconnaissance archives project at Keele University in north-central England.

The photos, a key source of intelligence for Allied commanders during the war, include American troops landing in Normandy on D-Day, the effects of the bombing of Cologne, Germany, and the German battleship Bismarck being hunted by the Royal Navy.

Before the digitalisation, using the photo archive had meant a manual search through thousands of boxes.

That will be something else!!! To Be able to go back in time with these photos. emoticon I don't know about anyone else but I have always been a big history buff on WW I and WW II.

Have you ever been to terraserver? If you haven't here is the link. They have really good satellite and aerial photos. It is fun to play with and email a buddy with a aerial photo of his or her's house. emoticon

Thanks Krieger for the link, but I've been to Terraserver. Where I used to live you could see the doghouse I built from their photos.

Here is a site you might like. I went to it once and read some of the accounts on holding the bridges during the allied assult.

That is a really great website!!! emoticon I haven't seen that one before. Thanks! For posting it!!! I will run the whole tour. Speaking of holding bridges. My Grandfather maned a quad 50 cal. shooting down German fighter planes as they tried to bomb one bridge. I forgot the name of the bridge...I'll ask him the next time I am at his house.
