posticon Put Your Trust in the U.N.?

As you probably know, there has been some mention in the news about the U.N.'s misconduct in the Congo. I wouldn't say a lot, but there was some. Of course nothing like the coverage of the supposed horrors of Abu Ghraib we still keep hearing about. Grown men made to become naked and all is a pretty terrible thing.

That's the point I want to make. We in the United States with its liberal media, or wherever liberal media is found--it is apparent have pretty much turned a blind eye on the real horrors of the UN and its “peacekeeping” forces. The recent scandal of sexual abuse reported in the Congo is nothing new either.

I want to stress something and one of the reasons this information is so important, is that if John Kerry had won the last election, the UN was the very entity this loser wanted to embrace. Don't forget that fact as you read further.

Way back in June of this year,Peter Jenkins reported some of the UN's abuses as they were known 6 months ago and was upset that it wasn't being reported even then and wrote this: “Those who might doubt this conclusion need look no further than the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly known as Zaire) at the disgraceful behaviour of the United Nations peacekeeping force in that country”. Only within the last week or two did UN Secretary General Kofi Annan admit publicly that some of his civilian and military had carried out the sexual abuses we've heard about. The UN quickly condemned the US for things like underwear on men's heads while pedophilia apparently wasn't a problem.

As the June article I stated above mentioned about a little girl 13 years old and under UN supervision: “If I go and see the soldiers at night and sleep with them, then they give me food, maybe a banana or a cake,” she says, looking down at her son. “I have to do it with them because there is nobody to care, nobody else to protect Joseph except me. He is all I have and I must look after him.” How truly sickening and sad.

I think Peter Jenkins had the right idea when he also wrote this: “And I thought the Left cared about the rights of women and girls and opposed their exploitation. So why the silence concerning the Congo? I can think of three reasons:

A) The Left cannot find the Democratic Republic of the Congo on a map.

B) The Left believes that the UN is above criticism.

C) The Left cannot blame the United States or Israel for the rape of the Congolese girls"

You can read the liberal Democrats and John Kerry in that too if you want. Equally disgusting is this blind condemnation by the UN in this report on our own nation's failures: “The United Nations' top human rights official (Bertrand Ramcharan), said today that the mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers could constitute a war crime, and he called for the immediate naming of an international figure to oversee the situation.”

Back in 1997, there were reports Belgian U.N. troops roasted a Somali boy.

Now keep in mind he is saying the UN needs to be the one to look into our “war crimes”. The same UN who for months did nothing to stop little girls from being raped. What is equally disgusting is that this article came out at the same time this man, Mr. Ramcharan, a British-educated trial lawyer, who is also a professor of international human rights law at Columbia University, appeared to look the other way when his own organization was involved with far, far worse "crimes".

--------continued below from main page----------

But this is definitely not the first time UN personnel have done despicable things. Horrible things. I'll quote some things I read in another article:“Back in 1997, there were reports Belgian U.N. troops roasted a Somali boy. A military court reportedly sentenced two paratroopers to a month in jail and a fine of 200 pounds for the offense.

Another sergeant was accused of murdering a Somali whom he was photographed urinating upon. Another child, accused of stealing food from the paratroopers' base, died after being locked in a storage container for 48 hours. Fifteen other members of the same regiment were investigated in 1995 for "acts of sadism and torture" against Somali civilians.

In 1995, a group of Canadian paratroopers were investigated for torturing a Somali to death and killing three others.

Gruesome photos were published in a Milan magazine of Italian soldiers torturing a Somali youth and abusing and raping a Somali girl. Paratroopers claim they were specifically trained in methods of torture to aid interrogation. According to one witness, Italian soldiers tied a young Somali girl to the front of an armored personnel carrier and raped her while officers looked on.

…..an Italian battalion commander who sexually abused and strangled a 13-year-old Somali boy. There are also allegations that, in 1993, Italian soldiers beat seven suspected Somali thieves, killing one; that they beat to death a 14-year-old boy who sold a false medal and beat a couple in a car.

Where were the UN's Kofi Annan, our own John Kerry, and the liberal press when these horrible things occurred? If you are like me, until I did the research to write this editorial, I had never heard of the UN crimes I mentioned above. But we sure have heard about Abu Grhaib and how horrible the United States is at every chance haven't we?

And one more thing. Where is the cry from the liberal left on these horrors? The very same liberals that wanted John Kerry and his misplaced support of the great UN? You know, the same group all over the country lying in their fetal positions of wonderment over George Bush and the Republicans winning yet another round? Something else sickening I suppose.
