The Cravats
The Cravats are one of my favourite bands of all-time. Like a few punk/post-punk groups around the time, they were fairly experimental and used jazzy elements to create very dark, angry songs. There's no sloganeering here - it's intelligent stuff and I could quote lyrics at someone all day just because they strike me as being amazing ("Law is the pencil, the utensil/that you use, to draw the line/indentikit for that new outfit/there are many names on that list/and one is mine"; Rub Me Out)
Of course it helps that vocalist The Shend has a deep, growling voice that reminds me of a young Nick Cave.
Their records never set the world alight but thanks to Peel Sessions, hard touring, and a steady stream of singles they did well in the indie charts and gathered a small following. Today I think they're getting a lot more attention than they did in the 80s and have released a new single earlier in the year.
You can listen to them here: http://www.myspace.com/cravatsmusic

Re: The Cravats
Oh baby, baby look at The Shend, all sexy and larger than life! Rub Me Out - One of the best songs possibly. Their lyrics are so well thought out and put together. S'pose they didn't get picked up because of the content of their music.
