Beach Erosion Report from DEP
10/26/05
The Department of Environmental Protection on Tuesday conducted a coastal storm survey and preliminary damage assessment for the state's beaches. Here are the results reported for beaches in Monmouth and Ocean counties:
Long Beach Island beaches and dune systems have been significantly eroded, leaving coastal infrastructure vulnerable to storm surge and direct wave attack. Mentioned are beaches in Harvey Cedars, Long Beach Township, Brant Beach and Beach Haven.
Emergency repairs are needed in Harvey Cedars. An emergency beach-fill project is pending in Beach Haven, at Leeward and Merivale avenues. The borough is conducting emergency sand placement under the current beach maintenance permit.
Keyport, Union Beach, Keansburg, Bayshore floodgate, Port Monmouth, Belford, Leonardo, Atlantic Highlands, Highlands, Sea Bright, Monmouth Beach and Cliffwood Beach: No significant erosion reported.
Long Branch: A vertical cut 2 feet to 3 feet high by 50 feet to 75 feet wide, no damage.
Elberon, Allenhurst, Deal and Loch Arbour: A vertical sloping cut 1 foot to 2 feet high by 50 feet to 75 feet wide, no damage.
Asbury Park, Ocean Grove, Bradley Beach and Avon by the Sea: A vertical sloping cut 1 foot to 3 feet high by 25 feet to 50 feet wide, windblown sand, with minor coastal flooding in Avon by the Sea.
Belmar: A vertical sloping cut 1 foot to 3 feet high by 25 feet to 50 feet wide, minor coastal flooding.
Spring Lake and Sea Girt: A vertical sloping cut 1 foot to 3 feet high by 25 feet to 50 feet wide, windblown sand.
Manasquan: A vertical sloping cut 1 foot to 3 feet high by 25 feet to 50 feet wide, moderate coastal flooding, windblown sand.
Point Pleasant Beach: No significant erosion, windblown sand.
Bay Head and Mantoloking: A vertical sloping cut 2 feet to 3 feet high by 50 feet to 75 feet wide, minor damage to dunes.
Lavallette, Brick, Ortley Beach, Seaside Heights, Seaside Park, Island Beach State Park: A vertical sloping cut 2 feet to 3 feet high by 50 feet to 75 feet wide, windblown sand.
Barnegat Light: No significant erosion, no damage.
North Beach: A vertical sloping cut 3 feet to 4 feet high by 25 feet to 50 feet wide.
Loveladies and Surf City: A vertical sloping cut 3 feet to 4 feet high by 25 feet to 50 feet wide, with moderate coastal flooding.
Harvey Cedars: A vertical cut 3 feet to 4 feet high by 50 feet to 75 feet wide, with severe damage to dunes and significant coastal flooding.
Ship Bottom, Long Beach Township, Brant Beach and Holgate: A vertical sloping cut 3 feet to 4 feet high by 25 feet to 50 feet wide, with minor coastal flooding.
Beach Haven: A vertical sloping cut 3 feet to 4 feet high by 25 feet to 50 feet wide with minor damage to dunes and minor coastal flooding.
