Re: The 80s
Translation of Aire (Air) by Mecano
After a night with hangover
When I tried to wake up
I noticed, through my navel,
I started to deflate away
My body wrinkled like a sheet of paper
I was stepping, how funny,
into the gaseous state
Once I metamorphed
I felt much better
I was a dark, grey air
very polluted
Whatever the case was, it was apparent it was city air
Not the most healthy
The most prefered by the humans
Air...
I dreamt for a moment that I was
Air...
Oxygen, nitrogen and argon
Without shape nor color
I was Air
Flying away...
Since I'm very concious,
even in this situation,
I decided to be consecuent
with my new dimention
I tried out been breathed in
by the one asleep next to me
Without getting into details
I know to do better things
Since I wasn't satisfied
by with the sexual experience
My vapor thickened,
I evolved into a huracane
I twisted and turned, twice or more
By the 5th time around I had worn myself out
The room too small
for these dreams of mine
Air...
I dreamt for a moment that I was
Air...
Oxygen, nitrogen and argon
Without shape nor color
I was Air
Flying away...
And I'm sorry for my girlfriend,
And the glass I blew away
I ran away through the window
I threw myself in a free fall
My bad luck
when I was about to take over
I became human again
Air...
I dreamt for a moment that I was
Air...
Oxygen, nitrogen and argon
Without shape nor color
I was Air
Flying away...
Is a bizarre song, but to me captures the 80s spirit.
I love Ana Torroja's soothing voice, is so melodic, never hits a bad note. They are often critizied because of their lyrics; not everybody understands art, and even fewer understand poetry and metaphores, that's what I think. They are a 80s band in the whole sense of the word and maybe just reading the lyrics you wont feel the song, because it's her voice what brings it alive.
I couldn't resist myself, so here is Hijo de la Luna(Son of the Moon), is based on a gypsy tale, also by Mecano:
A fool is he who doesn't understand
A legend tells that a gypsy woman
Implored to the moon one night
Weeping, she begged till dawn
To marry a gypsy man
"You'll have your brown-skin man,"
spoke the full moon from the sky
"But in retun I want the first child
that you have with him,"
One who sacrifices her child
In order not to be alone
Is not going to love him very much
Moon you want to be mother
and you can't find a love
Who makes you a woman.
Tell me, moon of silver
What you intend to do
with a child of flesh?
ahhh, ahhh
Son of the Moon
From a cinnamon-skinned father a son was born
White like an ermine's belly,
With gray eyes instead of olive,
Moon's albino son
"Dam his features!
This is not a gypsy man's son
and you won't get away with this"
Moon you want to be mother
and you can't find a love
Who makes you a woman.
Tell me, Moon of silver
What you intend to do
with a child of flesh?
ahhh, ahhh
Son of the Moon
The gypsy believing himself dishonored
went to his wife, knife in hand
"Whose son is he?
You have decieved me!"
He stabbed her to death
Then he went to the mountain
With the child in his arms
and abandoned it there
Moon you want to be mother
and you can't find a love
Who makes you a woman.
Tell me, moon of silver
What you intend to do
with a child of flesh?
ahhh, ahhh
Son of the Moon
And on nights when the moon is full
It's because the child is happy
and if the child cries
The moon will wane
To make him a cradle
and if the child cries
The moon will wane to make him a cradle

Re: The 80s
Sorry Iri, I was meaning to reply to this but those lyrics were awesome. Thanks so much for posting them. Any more?
As for other 80's stuff, I really liked the Thompson Twins and their song 'Hold me Now'.

Hey Lolo I just put their song "Lay Your Hands On Me" as on of my songs that lift you up, I love this one too - they were so sweet.
