Swept Away By the Day... (My thoughts of a perfect morning)
As promised this was ready. I'd been trying to find a place to put it since the day I wrote it. I changed very very little form what was in my notebook. I hope it can begin to convay the way I felt.
Swept Away By the Day
3/11/06
I stopped at Varnum’s picnic area.
Closed all winter with a chain. I had missed it so.
The light sucked me into an edge of the wood, usually not visited, not accessible in summer or fall. Covered then in brambles, vines and leaves.
The light had an erotic quality, on the tangled fallen limbs and twisted bare vines.
I thought of Viggo in that instant (I won’t tell you what I thought).
I studied a fallen tree trunk knobby and knotted where branches had been cut away some time ago.
I followed the path towards two of my favorite trees. Taking more photos as I went.
It wasn’t far but the camera was full when I arrived. So I just starred.
Amazed again at the wonder of them, huge trunks graceful reaching branches.
I continued on the path – I had never been that far before. It sloped down gradually.
The woods on my left: a rolling meadow to my right.
I was overwhelmed. I stood still. Trying to absorb the day. It’s beauty.
My eyes closed, feeling the warm sun and chilly breeze upon my face.
Studying the sounds. Birds chirping, rustling leaves distant traffic and a train on the nearby freight line. Bells from the chapel, occasionally drifting in (the wind was not right to hear them clearly).
I wanted to stand there forever. But knew I couldn’t. I was already wondering how I would get back – I rarely walked this far and the slope would seem steep on the return.
In spite of that I was drawn to the bottom.
I was still again.
A robin came close, a pair of geese overhead, their shadows on the ground. Glimpses of the fright train through the trees. Rust and red. Between the browns and hint of spring greenness in the grass and trees.
I had not been this way before but realized there was another way to return to my starting place that was not so steep.
I said another prayer. Walking behind the wood. Ground falling away sharply several yards to my right.
My heart. Aching with the power of the morning. I wanted to keep every second of it in my mind.
Returning to a place I knew. Went the longer way between the scatter of trees in the clearing to avoid the hard incline. I sat on a bench and watched the turquoise blue sky and thin white and gray clouds, through the tall treetops, with hints of budding.
Grateful my poor health had let me do so much, more than usual.
I really didn’t want to leave but the wind had made my cheeks too icy by then.
But I had reached that rare center.
Back towards my car. U2’s “It’s A Beautiful Day” came to mind. Especially the line “What you don’t have, you don’t need it now.”
The light had changed where I had begun, but no photos to capture it. It had probably been for the best. Were it not to have been that way, I’d have spent too much time observing through lens, the cameras’ eye instead of my own.
I looked at the clock only after I was on my way to the coffee shop, where I now sit writing this. An hour and a half had been spent in the park with no track kept.
It’s now noon. I hope this is burned in my memory for eternity. I did not want for anything in that hour. There was nothing else. Only the beauty of nature.
This would be my heaven.
Bliss. Peace. Tranquility.

Re: Swept Away By the Day... (My thoughts of a perfect morning)
Glad you liked this Loretta (it has gotten a bit lost at the bottom, but something has to be at the bottom).
So I am happy you finally saw it.
As for taking photos in the woods with Viggo... that's where my mind was going too.
Stuff like that is figuring in that Viggo story I have on the back burner.

Just wanted to ask how this story is coming along. Is it still in the works?
