Judge Not?

"Judge not lest ye be judged." - Matt 7:1

Every sinner's favorite verse. But they generally fail to look at the context.
"You can't know a book by it's cover," they say. Jesus never said that. However, He did say, "You can know a tree by it's fruit."

Here's how Paul Washer explains it.
quoting

When Jesus said "judge not" He was talking about a group of Pharisaical religious leaders who were clawing over each other in order to get ahead ecclesiastically. They were loveless men who took great joy in tearing down others and snuffing out any divine light that was in them. In the same verse, Jesus tells you that you will know them by their fruit.

Matt 7:17-20
Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

So, what do ya think?

Re: Judge Not?

Amen brother. I talk about this at CoffeeZon. We are not to judge the world but we are to judge one another (the body of Christ), by our fruits.
Men's philosophies and ideas can ruin your faith.
quoting

Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

If we don't "beware-judge" then we are in danger of being "spoiled through philosophy and vain deceit".

We are to judge righteously-truth, judging by the fruits is how we do that. If it weren't for Christian integrity we wouldn't even recognize the fruit.
Integrity is being who we say we are
quoting

 Psalm 25:21, NIV.
"May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope is in You."

Are we required to hold Christians only to this standard, or does this apply to the unsaved as well?

Oh yes, and Mel, why are there 2 threads with the same title?

We are not "required" to hold anyone to any standard. We cannot judge the "world", the world is governed by the god of this world. Our Father will judge the world. We are separate from the world, we live in the spirit by faith not by sight.
We (body of Christ) are taught to beware of false prophets and to "know by the fruits" of a spirit, which is integrity, whether it is true or false....
a judgment-Discernment.

If a false prophet is teaching you contrary to the gospel, you will know he/she is contrary if you are living the gospel yourself, this is "righteous" judging.
TV evangelists are a good example of your judgments on him/her. If you hear the words of this false gospel, you turn the channel, you have judged him/her as being false.

Beware means to watch for what's wrong, to be on guard against something or someone.

quoting

Heb 5:14
But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

I was gonna put a post up on this subject, but was editing different things I had regarding "judgment." It must've gotten late and I ended up putting them both out here without realizing it.
They can be combined.

Must be the Holy Spirit working in us. Sometimes I get a tingly feeling when I hear something contrary to biblical teaching.

Re: Judge Not?

There are certain things we cannot judge.

Someone's eternal salvation.
Their motivation.
Their level of righteousness.

And we certainly shouldn't have a "better than you" attitude.
However, we are called to judge other things.

We can judge those who are sinning. (These are the ones who will most often quote this verse out of context to you.)
We can judge the bearing of fruit.
We can judge false teaching.

Otherwise, where would this leave us? emoticon Right where unbelievers would like to keep us, as doormats to be walked over while they continue in their sins guilt-free!

Amen brother mel. Very well put too. Praise the Lord!
We are sinners saved by grace and we all fall short of the glory of God!
If it weren't for His grace I'd be hopeless. Thank you Lord for saving a wretch like me! Halleluiah!

Well, most of that came right off of listening to Way of the Master Radio. There's some good stuff on there sometimes.

Praise God for all we have, all the little things we so often take for granted, and praise Him for the freedoms we have here to be able to discuss these things openly.
