Need a little help
Can someone explain to me what is Baptism of the Holy Spirit?
I have been doing a little study on this and am getting confused. So before I get real confused I am requesting a little help.

Re: Need a little help
Well, hmmm. Maybe I’ll have to do a study on it, too. I know that it’s discussed by charismatics and pentecostals, but I think they understand it differently than what we learn of it in the Bible.
Here are a few links.

I know Wiki isn’t always the greatest source, but it gives some different viewpoints on the subject.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baptism_with_the_Holy_Spirit
Here’s an Assemblies of God view, which I don’t necessarily agree with.
http://www.ag.org/top/Beliefs/Position_Papers/pp_4185_spirit-filled_life.cfm
These two are good sources, but I haven’t read the articles, yet.

Re: Need a little help
Yeah, I'm still looking at it myself.
I copied and printed the Assemblies of God one and am still reading it. It's very interesting. They make the point that baptism of the Holy Spirit comes after salvation and back it up with Scripture. Makes sense to me.
The main thing I disagree with so far, is their idea that you have to speak in tongues if you are baptized in the Spirit. I don't think we should attempt to limit God in that way, and believe that being filled with or baptized in the Holy Spirit can be manifest differently in different people according to God's purpose, but will always be powerful.
Back to my reading.......

Re: Need a little help
Acts 10:44-48 (New International Version)
44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46For they heard them speaking in tongues[a] and praising God.
Then Peter said, 47"Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have." 48So he ordered that they be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked Peter to stay with them for a few days.
This is where I am getting confused. Here when Peter was speaking to the people (Jews and Gentiles) They received the Holy Spirit before they got wet (Baptized). I have always wondered at what time you received the gift of the Holy Spirit. I believe that the Holy Spirit is what makes you get up and go forward to publicly accept Christ. What else would it be? Peter more or less confirms this in this scripture. You receive the spirit, go forward, get baptized. Why have to be baptized in the Holy Spirit, you already have it.

Well according to what I was taught (Pentecostal if ya wanted to know) ...
Yes you have the Holy spirit in you, it prompts you to stand up and accept christ, but having the Holy Spirit Within you is not the same as being "Baptised in the Holy Spirit"
Baptism of the Holy Spirit comes after Sanctification. It isn't Just having the Holy Spirit Part of your life, but it is the endowment of power for service. (AKA receiving talents or gifts that may help further the kingdom of God)
Speaking of tongues is just one in MANY of the possible gifts one may receive.
does that make any sense?

1 Corintians 12:12-13 clearly states that all have been baptized just asall have made to drink(the indwelling of the Holy Spirit). No where is scripture that I know of does it specify that we are to be baptized with/in/by the Spirit, we have already recieved the gift of the Holy Spirit at the moment of salvation.(This according to Peter)
Jesus said, "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy spirit". Matthew 28:19 These are the instructions of baptism from Jesus.
Ephesians 4:5 One Lord, One faith, one baptism: 6 One God and father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Every believer has experienced baptism in the Holy Spirit and has recieved the gift of the Holy spirit at the moment they believed.
I'm not as confused, I don't think.

lol run run run as fast as you can lol just kidding. Though I am confused by the scriptures you posted...
quoting 1 Corinthians 12:12-13 ~ NIV
12The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. 13For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body—whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
I don't know if by spirit, the writer meant Holy spirit, or God, but to me it sounds like it was encompassing the trinity as a whole. Polytheism was very common in that era, and so to me, it sounds more like a warning aginast worshiping more than one God. MANY christians (especially political leaders) would claim to be christian, worship with them ect, but also they would worship the "Sun God", or numerous other "Gods"
quoting Ephessians 4:3-6 ~ NIV
3Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. 4There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to one hope when you were called— 5one Lord, one faith, one baptism; 6one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.
Also, in Ephessians 4:5 it doesn't not sound as if it is talking about "Baptism of the Holy Spirit" to me it sounds more like They are saying 1 water baptism.
Baptism did not start with John the Baptist. It is an ancient tradition. not just in judism, but many other faiths have similar practices. In Judism it was an act of cleansing, before they wrote the torah, ect. it was also used toprovide passage from one time in a person's life to another. But once christianity came about, a new meaning to baptism came with it. My guess would be that the scripture is saying that only this one sort of baptism is the right one.
From what I know being Baptised by the holy spirit is mislabled, it isn't just something that is, or that you can make happen on your own. It is God offering his Gifts to you of and through the Holy Spirit and you accepting them.
Please make sure to correct anything in my thoughts that seems off!!!
Who knows though, I am definately not a biblical scholar, and most of the stuff on here I learned in my World history class... where is pastor rick, and Jr?? lol
