THE WORD for September 3
Testing
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you (1Pe 4:12)
_____________
Maybe thought that if we obeyed the Lord that all would go smoothly. It's like the disciples who got into the boat with Jesus when He said, "Let us go over to the other side." (Mar 4:35) They obeyed, and then found themselves in a terrifying storm.
Testing is a method of purifying metal by heating it up until it melts. The impurities float to the top where it can be skimmed off. Isn't that what happens in our hearts when we go through trials?
Worthless, faithless thoughts rise during times of testing. The impure comes to the surface. We trusted the Lord but the trial exposes our need to trust him more and to lean on his promises more completely.
A man asked the silversmith how he knew when the silver was pure. "That's easy", said the silversmith, "when I can see my reflection in the silver." Christian, did you not hope that people would see Jesus more clearly in you? Let's pray.
Lord Jesus, forgive us for doubting your faithful care. Remind us that you are able to free us from unfaithful thoughts. Purify our faith in you. Help us lean on you more and to rely on your promise- that our rest is found in you during stormy times. Amen
Today's very great and precious promise
The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests hearts. (Pro 17:3)
We have God's Word on it.
