Toleration
I have noticed lately that many people have said that Christians should be TOLERANT of other religions. They also would say that if you speak out against someone's beliefs then you are not being tolerant of others beliefs. Well if it goes against what the Bible teaches then why should a Christian tolerate it? I don't understand where this is really coming from. I mean I can't find an example in the Bible where God was tolerant of idols or the worship of other gods.
I believe this type of teaching is one of those wolves in sheep's clothing. Our society is so big on making everyone feel good, have good self esteem, and finding reasons for their actions rather than holding people accountable for their own actions.
What do you think? I mean this is really just a pondering on my part. Should we be tolerant of Hindu, Shintu, Bhuddism, Islam? Is God tolerant of these?

Re: Toleration
I would say it really depends on what is meant by "tolerance".
Should we love them. Yes Jesus showed love and mercy to people of many faiths.
Should we allow them to infiltrate our hearts and minds with their heresy and false gods. No way, God did not allow this in either the New or the Old testament, and I don't think we should either.
To me tolerance means allowing those with other beliefs to live peacefully in your community without discriminating against them. It means having respect for them, (not their beliefs). To me, it does not mean allowing any aspect of their faith to compromise your own.
But it seems that most of the rest of my world does not share this view on "tolerance"

Re: Toleration
"Tolerance is a virtue for those who have no convictions." -GK Chesterton
I always liked that quote!
And I agree with Brite, we most definately should love them. But tolerance does not mean acceptance of false beliefs as though they were true.
If we really believe the Bible, then we know that these people are deceived and headed to hell. How can we just sit by and watch that happen?
What tolerance means these days, is that we Christians should just shut up so that people can go on deceiving themselves, because they hate the light.
I believe that Christians are quite tolerant, Muslims are constantly in the news killing people because they won't convert, or because they have left Islam.
Yet, nobody goes after them.
I wonder why? Oh, I know! Because they're afraid they might be killed!
Christians are a much easier target, that's all.

Re: Toleration
I don't know maybe tolerant is the wrong word. But I have seen time in and time out people have been shunned because of their beliefs by Christians. Or I guess maybe a even better word would be judged??? I myself have had this happen to myself. Been judged because someone thought they knew me and knew what I was about. You should as Christians WANT to show people the light not just tell them they are wrong and move on.
Love is what its all about not hate! lol

Re: Toleration
Yeah, you're right. They shouldn't just tell you they think you're wrong and run off. They should be able to stick around and show you what's wrong, and explain why from Scripture.
Or maybe they're afraid that you were right, and they were wrong, and didn't want to hear it.
Even on some "Christian" message boards, I've been treated worse than at skeptic and atheist boards. There's a big red flag for someone calling themselves Christian.

Re: Toleration
I too have seen some of the Christian "snobbery" that I think the both of you are talking about. And it's not right, or biblical. Kind of reminds me of the Pharisees.

Ah Bob, I see your poking peoples buttons again, fishing for some entertainment.
We could leave everyone else alone, but since we believe that without Christ everyone will spend eternity in hell, how would that be a "nice" thing to do on our part?

Re: Toleration
"A pain in the keester" means a job well done! Hehehe-(brother mel).
Not only that, it tells me that you have heard the gospel so there will be no excuse when you are confronted by God on judgment day! You won't have the "I didn't know, no one told me" excuse.
Also; what a contradiction to your claim! Have you noticed where you are when Christians are being a pain?
quoting I too have seen some of the Christian "snobbery"
