One reviewer has stated that this album is very disappointing, that all of the tracks are abysmal, and that this band is nowhere near as good as COF.
When I first bought this album I too was disappointed. I thought the singing and lyrics badly let the album down. It was only by listening to Miasma a few more times that I realised how fantastic it really is.. There are distinct differences in sound between all of the instruments, and the songs are written very intelligently so that each instrument complements the others to create a whole, which many bands fail to do.
The guitar riffs are interesting, and more original than those in most black metal. The drums too, are not simply thrashed for five minutes non-stop. The keyboards add a very distinct, atmospheric feeling to the music, which is lacking in most black metal. For example, in many cases, the discerning listener can get the feeling that the music is thrown together quite quickly, but not here.
One of the more interesting aspects of this music is the effect it creates - Hecate Enthroned make their music seems truly far more evil than most of their contemporaries ever manage. Moving between fast and slow, soft and hard, they build up tension, which is then released in bursts of incredible, original black metal.
The songs are not composed of one or two parts, repeated or alternated between throughout; there are many distinct sections, which the band skilfully moves between. Hecate Enthroned do not feel that every instrument must be played all the time, throughout every song, and so they manage to keep the listener guessing, curious to see what will come next.
As for the lyrics, they are not the best I have ever seen, but then again, I have rarely been impressed with the originality or meaningfulness of any black metal band's lyrics, so I do not see this as a problem for black metal fans. The style of singing is what many people will find it hardest to enjoy. Several parts of the lyrics are spoken. My answer to this is that at least Hecate Enthroned have the courage to try something a bit different to the usual. And no, the singing does not sound like Dani Filth, except to someone who doesn't realise just how much black metal is screeched (for want of a better word, you know what I mean) at quite a high pitch. Guess what? COF was not the first band to do this, they are just commercial enough (this is not a negative criticism) to reach a greater audience than most black metal bands are.
I would strongly recommend this album to anyone interested in something more original, interesting and thoughtful than much black metal (COF included). It may take a while, but persevere, listen to this a few times over a period of time, and you will be rewarded.

This album was very disapointing. I had seen a Hecate Entrhroned Video a while ago and was impressed. I suspect that this was largly due to the fact I had heard very little Black/Death Metal up too this point. All of the tracks on this album are abysmal. The Death/Black Metal vocals and some of the riffs are respectable,if not great. However the spoken parts and songwriting are among the worse I have heard. Even poorer is the ridiculous lyrics. Some people have made a comparison between this band and Cradle of Filth, which I consider an insult to cof
