1.UPON PROMEATHEAN SHORES (Unscriptured waters)

This aptly named "Promeathea (Thy Darkest mask of surreality)" is a fitting
opener for what is an epic but somewhat flawed debut. Fitting because in
combines the atmosphere and vision of this ambitious release, but also
summarizes the amateurism coupled with poor recording quality and
unprofessionalism that makes " Upon Promeathean Shores (Unscriptured
waters)" a black metal roller-coaster of an album.

Dubbed by many including cradle of filth's Sarah "Jezebel" Deva as one of
the best albums ever released,
"Upon Promeathean Shores (Unscriptured waters)" kicks in rather disjointedly
with "The Crimson Thorns (My Immortal Dreams)" which consists of two main
musical sections arranged in three main parts. A direct and powerful
introduction serves to introduce the listener to the band's plethora of
brute-strength combined with fast guitar melodies and atmospheric if poorly
recorded vocal contributions. The true potential of this song is closest met
during the mid section in which the underground black metal onslaught stops
and a first rate melody kicks in at a slower pace. The lengthily and
absorbing mid-section does not take the duration of the song beyond four and
a half minuets as it ends with a unique individual piece taking it into the
next song.

The somewhat forgettable "A Graven Winter" is littered with inadequacy in
riff-making and generic song-filling chord sections. The seemingly endless
monotony of the slow mid-section embodies all that is worst about " Upon
Promeathean Shores (Unscriptured waters)", All credibility among listeners
and musicians alike is raped by Jon's low pitched growling through out such
a section. This is not to say that Hecate Enthroned were not even at this
early stage a promising force in the world black metal. This surely ranks
above debut releases from bands that many might claim are better-known acts
such as "Cradle of Filth" and "Dimmu Borgir".

"To feed upon thy dreams" doesn't so much begin as never end, The mere fact
that it is placed after "A Graven Winter" as one of the earlier songs serves
to point out how deeply the knife of disorganization and unprofessionalism
has wounded Hecate Enthroned. A sea of average riffs and atmospheric but
boring keyboarding plays alongside unintelligible lyrics sung in a dire
fashion, The fact that the lyrics are indecipherable is in fact a god-send
judging by the printed lyrics of the so accurately named "Luciferian death
code" where Jon seems to flounder in a cesspit of mindless gothic drivel.

"An ode for a haunted wood" starts in a dramatic an uncharacteristically
polished fashion. The steady militaristic beat of the war drums serves as
the beating pulse for this eerily haunting introduction. The listener is
instantly swept into a powerfully tuneful faster section. Although Jon's
vocal contribution is still present, "An Ode for a haunted wood" finds
itself relatively accessible. Unlike some of the bands other work, This
song's black metal casserole was made with finer ingredients, but the sour
radish of bad recording quality remains uneaten after this black metal
banquet.

The keyboard outro is a fittingly lamenting echo of "An ode for a haunted
wood". It is obvious to the musical connoisseur just why it has been
cleverly titled "Through spell binding branches (Deepest Witchcraft)". This
track is not plagued by the toneless screeching or the rubbish poetry of a
latex clad fool.

The two bonus tracks are of no bonus to the listener. The re-recording of
"Danse Macabre" shows that innovation is not always desirable. Whereas
"Luciferian Death Code" shows that music is not always desirable. The
inclusion of these so called "bonus" tracks on both the original and
remastered versions of he album have always remained a mystery.
